Probably a Tiger's Den topic... He looks to have the measurables for it, but I've read that it's doubtful.
rivals has him listed as a LB on their roster...lsusports.net has him listed as a safety but in his bio, mentioned he was rated the 43rd best LB by Scout when he was in high school. Not that I'm taking the side of Rivals over LSU's official website, but it's not out of the rhelm of possibility.
Clemons, Stefoin Francois & Chad Jones - any one of these Safeties could probably be a hell of a LB. I think we'll see one of them convert.
I might sound crazy for saying this...but that's never deterred me before, so... If someone has to move from safety to LB, I vote Chad Jones. From MY observations, he isn't the best cover guy in the world, but he is a heck of a hitter, and has TREMENDOUS closing speed. IMHO, the "SEC speed" thing is nearly always taken out of context. TRUE SEC speed is found at LB and DL...these are the positions that seperate the SEC from everyone else in the speed category. I'm sure everyone saw the sack/forced fumble by Highsmith last night. That was an awesome example of "SEC speed"...and he is gone now. We need someone to replace him...someone with that explosive speed...and, IMHO, that is CJ.
Originally, I thought no way Chad Jones to LB. But the more I think about it, he was basically used as a LB all year long, and with the way Coleman stepped up at Safety he may have a better shot at PT at LB. IMO, the question is whether Chad is willing to make the move or not, which is based on whether he is dedicated to football or still wants to seriously pursue baseball. I don't see him playing LB and baseball.
I understand the reasoning...and think it could be a good move...I just dont see CJ wanting to make that move.
With the spread offense the thing in college football fast and smaller (215-225) LBs are going to be more and more the norm. And LSU pretty much used Jones and McCray this way in a sort of ROVER position. With that said Jones and Clemons are listed at about 215 on the roster on LSUSPORTS.NET. Also that is about the same size as a former Tiger LB - Eric Alexander. I think it could work without either player having to pack on too much weight. This would provide a playmaker for the D
