Miles' statements recently about position changes got me to thinking about this. Think about this: defense sees a huddle of: 5 OL QB JJ TE Mitch Joseph (or Chase Clement or any of the other blocking TE) WR Terrance Toliver WR Reuben Randle DeAngelo Peterson Russell Shepard Does the D expect 2 TE, Shep as RB, in which case they want a base defense or maybe even jumbo to deal with the 2 TE? Or does the D expect an empty backfield, with 4 wide and a blocking TE to help with pass protection? A LB matched up on either DeAngelo Peterson or Shep is a huge mismatch. On the other hand a nickel or dime package against 2 TE and Shep at RB is a problem too. And no way for the D to know from the guys in the huddle which they'll see. Hope Crowton has some fun with this flexibility this year.
I respect what you are saying, but if you are basing our "flexibility" off of our current roster, that's something that he had last year and the year before, too really. The offense still stagnated.
I have reservations about Crowton, no argument there. However, last year Shep was mostly practicing at QB and for all intents and purposes was NOT a WR. He had a few plays for him but I'm pretty sure he didn't know the entire route tree. This year I expect him to be a full time WR in the Percy Harvin mold, in that he also sees time at RB and in the wildcat. DeAngleo Peterson was in his first year at TE and didn't see a lot of action until the end of the year, and he was always the second TE after Richard Dickson. This year he'll be the #1 TE and on the field almost all the time.
Based on that huddle, there's only one thing the defense should expect: 5-yard penalty for 12 men in the huddle
LOL thanks....not enough coffee this morning. I counted twice and still got it wrong this morning. Fixed now.
I just want LSU to be able to run the damn ball, and run it with authority. If we can do that, the rest will come. The running game being effective will turn Jordan Jefferson from a capable quarterback, into a really good quarterback.
i know you were asking islstl, but it had better not be an issue this upcoming season. i don't think there will be any frustrations about who is on the field, but rather the plays being called. yep. even with the staff changes i don't think that LSU will automatically go from stagnant on offense to TTU offense in one season. but i do think what we will see is the same offense LSU ran in 2009, but with better results. and i don't think that's a bad thing.
