Now that the CWS title has been returned to its rightful home, I wonder: what does everyone feel is more satisfying, one game for the championship or the 3-game series? There will be tons of great memories from this series, but it will also be tainted by the big egg we laid in game 2. And from the standpoint of pure drama, Game 1 totally blew away game 3. Extra innings, one-run game, edge of your seat until the final pitch. It had the feel of a winner take all game even though both teams obviously knew they would still have life if they lost. It was a great series, but that game 1 would have been an all-time classic had the championship been decided on that night. Thoughts?
No way it's tainted. We had just won 14 in a row and dominated every team we played (except for Game 1), so we were just due for a game like that. I like the series the best because anything can happen in one game and the best team doesn't necessarily win. Not the case with a series.
Series, no room for a lucky win to take it all, as UT knows all about. No question as to who is the better team this way. Better game/player management.
OK, I don't mean tainted in the sense that the championship is somehow not legitimate. USC's claim to a football title in '03....that's tainted. I mean down the line when this one is talked about, the memorability (to coin a phrase) of a 3-game series win is not that of a winner-take-all situation, especially if we were talking about game 1 as that game.
Which is why a series is best. Anyone can have a bad game, but odds are over 3 the best team will win. The reverse will be in UT's mind of how they blew game 1 and then got dismantled in game 3.
A series is best for a championship, but I wouldn't mind the super-regionals to disappear. The playoff season is long and hot and rough on teams and on fans. It tends to favor teams with deep pitching staffs.
Series proves who is the better team. As we learned any team can be beat by one good pitcher. But when you have a series it requires a MUCH more calculated approach from a coaching perspective. Lineups, how you use your aces' and when. Game two proves one good player can win a ball game, a series shows how your depth of the overall team plays. Series hands down. That is why MLB is a 7 game series. It brings out great coaching.
