I'm going to guess Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia and Ohio State. I'm also thinking that Okla State might be one due to their big pockets booster.
I like the fact that the athletic department can support itself, cause the state and student's money should just go to academics.
NCAA report published on revenue and expenses in college athletics. I've got the link bookmarked at home...looked at the schools listed when I read the thread. One thing that seems to confuse people is you'll find football and basketball programs that don't receive anything from student fees, but some of the smaller programs will. It's labeled something like Non-program specific. A few have mentioned Florida but they still receive government support. Along with UT, LSU, Ohio State you can add Michigan to the list as well. So, there's 4 of the 5. IF you google NCAA Financial report database you'll be able to find a few links, I'm sure. I know the Indianapolis Star published reports from '04-'05 that should pop up right at the top. There's a sports law blog I remember reading a year, year and a half ago that had a report on it as well. Student fees they do receive. Goverment support, indirect and direct institutional support they don't. You are right about the gymnastics attendance numbers...sell outs just about all the time.
Just using Alabama as an example, while the Ath. Dept. does receive student fees it contributes quite a bit of money over to the Academic side of the school each year. I don't know what the purpose is, but there is a "money shuffle" going on between the Academic side and the Athletic side. (tax related?) Millions coming from the Ath. Dept. to the school...another example is from a few years ago when the Rec Center was built. It's used by students, but the Ath. Dept. basically funded its construction.
Here's some data on the football programs at schools: http://sundaymorningqb.com/story/2008/2/11/14359/1034 Looks like OSU has been spending money on the wrong things. Maybe they could buy out of their conference and into a real one .
I was going to guess Texas and Texas ATM because if my memory serves me right there is or was no state taxes when I was there. The only other state that I remember being that way that I've lived is Alaska but they don't have many football programs up there. My thought about Texas ATM not wanting to play us in football. I'm trying to recall why not, it seems we were on the short end of the stick when we played them in the 90's, ouch, painful memories! How times have changed!
OK somebody here said Fl was not one of these schools. Where did this info come from? I am in a hated arguement that Fl is not one of these teams and he is fighting me tooth and nail. Can anybody help?
The University of Nebraska Athletic Department is self-sufficient and receives no state appropriations, institutional assistance or student fees. Can't believe no one on here knew that. I guess you loose a couple of games and people forget about you... http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle....6&ATCLPID=1&SENDING_AS_EMAIL=&PRINTABLE_PAGE=
