I mentioned it in the game thread... He lost outside contain on a number of key plays... I understand he was trying to make the play but he needs to understand that sometimes the end's job is to set the edge and turn the back inside for his teammates to make the tackle...
Jalen played a little apprehensive in the game (understandably), at one point I thought that was Meek Mills on the field
Earlier I spoke with someone who has played DB in the NFL about the busted plays LSU has allowed thus far, he said a lot of it looks schematic. Again, it boils down to the lack of adjustments by Steele. Sure the players have to do their part by getting their heads around but a lot of the issues are in the schemes.
Busts aren't schematic, these guys aren't beating the coverage in a poor scheme, they are uncovered. No scheme calls for receivers to be uncovered. Adjustments aren't to blame for busts either. Players not communicating, not understanding the assignments or misreading the play are the cause of coverage busts
Steele does have me concerned. I don't think he's doing a great job at this point. Way way way too much talent on that back end of the defense, and for them to look a little lost out there for too much of the time is concerning. We weren't perfect with Chavis, but guys back there knew their roles and played well as a unit. Thank goodness Coach O has done such a great job with the O-line.
Coach O has done a great job with the D-line. But you also have to give credit to the D-coordinator who calls the blitzes. I'm sure they work together like they are supposed to, but it does fall on Steele making the calls.
Zone coverage is where you see the busts. Players not knowing where they are supposed to be in that zone. When they play man they are solid but still get beat however they are usually there to tackle immediately. But in zone it's just find a hole and pick it apart. It's a lot easier for a player to know I got this guy than where do I go. Almost every big play has been a result of a busted zone or the DB not turning his head around.
I am happy it wasn't a Chavis defense out there on Florida's last drive on Saturday night. Pressuring the passer made a big difference on that last drive, and it was something that Chavis would never, ever do.
The one time he did it LSU got burned though. I'm just glad we are seeing development from the big guys. I'm not saying Chavis isn't a great coach, I think he is, I just think he hung his headset up after 2011. He wasn't in it anymore, didn't care.
On their last play we rushed two men. Everybody else dropped into coverage. That's when to go into the prevent defense. Only when you know they have to heave it. If a team with a good quarterback has the ball with a minute and a half, you can't sell out too early or he will get four first downs and a TD.
