Congrats on the WU win. Lots of dismal discussions on your board but I think you have a good team, first games don't give much insight for the season. If so, the B10 should stop playing football. As far as the Horns, well, I am not a fan of patsy OOC, and Mack didn't consult me for this years schedule. So, nothing to see here for now. Question for y'all about the SEC. Everyone knows of the pride and support you have for the other teams in your conference. I didn't see the OSU/UG game saturday but does this Bama thread really display how badly the game was officiated or is there some SEC biased in the replies: The UGA-Okie State game proves they need to get rid of new unnecessary roughness rule - TideFans.com I'm about to pull out an LSU schedule, wouldn't mind coming to red stick for a weekend of some golf and a wicked death valley experience.
I'll tell you the truth, I didn't watch enough of that game to answer the question, but I did see the play in question, and in fact, I think I actually posted in the thread on Tidefans. - Here's the way I saw it...which you can take as pure fact because I'm saying it. The pass was a smidge high, but the receiver got both hands on the ball. He bobbled it, and the ball was not in his possession at the time of the tatoo being applied. The defender hit him with his shoulder/forearm, not helmet...and applied said shoulder/forearm to the receivers chest...not helmet. IMMEDIATELY, 4-5 flags came down from all directions. I'm pretty sure the replay guys in the booth even threw them for good measure. There were several replays that showed IMO a clean hit. Hard, but clean. The announcers even stated that "they might as well play touch" if that's a foul. From what I understand, these were SEC refs...so it comes as no surprise to see them screw up. However, I'm somewhat surprised they screwed up on this particular play, as they see plays like this all the time. I chalk it up to an overreaction to a new rule...or me not truly understanding the new rule. If this was an accurate call according to the new rule, I don't wanna watch football anymore. - BY THE WAY, I just noticed you were wondering if there was SEC bias about refs?? No SEC fans will EVER defend SEC refs.
The SEC is known for serveral things in football. 1. Speed 2. Defense 3. Crappy Officials I'm not sure which of those is more widely agreed upon.
:hihi: nice. but it was a clean hit. and a stupid stupid call. if this is how the sec officials are gonna call it all year, every d in the conference is in trouble.
I'm sure there is some bias in those assessments, especially coming from Bama fans. I don't know how much SEC football you get to watch as a Texas fan. I can say with confidence that historically, the quality of SEC officiating has been quite poor. They have a tendency to get very flag-happy, and you can count on them to screw up at least one big conference game royally every year. In fairness I think the quality has improved slightly in recent years, but still leaves a lot to be desired. The league office tends to circle the wagons instead of opting for any kind of transparency (see the Pac-10's treatment of the Oregon/OU game review booth fiasco compared to the SEC's response in the LSU/Auburn game from 2006). As an example, one of the SEC's top officials is a Bama graduate. If it were up to me I wouldn't let this guy anywhere near an SEC game for fear of even the appearance of impropriety or potential conflict of interest. That said, I will say this about personal foul and unsportsmanlike conduct calls that I've seen in SEC games so far. I understand the reasoning and the emphasis from the NCAA on protecting the QB and players in vulnerable positions. But I think officials are way too quick on the draw, particularly when it comes to running and scrambling QBs who get tackled going out of bounds. It sets a precedent for treating a running QB (which we're seeing more of all the time) with kid gloves while a RB is held to a less rigid standard, and it sends the message that a defense shouldn't aggressively pursue a QB for fear of a 15-yd penatly + automatic 1st. Same thing with DBs covering receivers. As for unsportsmanlike, I prefer to let the kids play and have fun. IMO, that penalty shouldn't be called unless there is open taunting of players/staff/fans, or unless there's an attempt to hurt a player or clearly give them an extra hit after the play is over, and those need to be clear-cut and not bang-bang plays.
Damn shame to see a kid get a flag for a good hit. And I'm glad at least the tv faces made some comments about it. Officiating really seems to be going pink the last few years, and I can admit to two late hit (OOB) calls against ou last year in the RRS that shouldn't have been. In fact, in one case the ou defender was trying to hold Colt up while going out of bounds (and I don't defend ou for anything!!!!). Then to do a 180, I was watching CU/CSU last night only to see a CU receiver make a catch (he was turned around), get two feet down, look forward, take a helmet to the chest, drop the ball, get helped off the field, and see it's a fumble - 1st down CSU. The Ram defender led with his crown, no flag. Go figure, definitely wasn't a B12 or SEC crew I guess. Late Oct, either Auburn or Tulane. I'd much rather see an SEC matchup, but halloween in BR might be, ummm, kinda fun. Not sure which yet.
LSU vs. Auburn '06. Worst. Officiated. Game. Ever. I have never been so mad after a game. :angryfire Oregon Vs. OU '06 (same day as the Auburn game) was pretty horrific too, but obviously, that wasn't SEC refs... or was it?
It was the same year. What really stuck in my craw after the LSU/Auburn game was how the SEC office acted like that crew did absolutely nothing wrong. The Pac-10, on the other hand, took full responsibility for their officials' screwup and publicly apologized.
