Worst call ever. Ref said the ball was tipped BEFORE contact was made with the WR. Let's take a look at the picture:
that was a bad call, but i thought the call when Ronnie Prude landed on a player's back trying to block a field goal penalty was worse. Seems like that was the first and only time that penalty has ever been called, how convenient.
In the dozens of college fb games I've watched since that 2004 game, I have never seen that penalty called again, ever.
I've never heard of that call before that game or since that game. Has anyone else in their life of watching football ever heard of a "leverage" penalty or seen it called at any level of football? I haven't. Maybe it has, but I've never seen it. They had to dig deep into the bag for that one. :dis:
The NCAA college fb rulebook is freely available to the public. When I get some free time I'll look it up to see if there is an actual "leverage" rule in the latest version, or if they got rid of the penalty altogether.
I think 5b1 is what was called on us wasn't it? Player Restrictions ARTICLE 5. a. No player may position himself with his feet on the back or shoulders of a teammate before the snap. PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. 15 yards from the succeeding spot [S27]. b. No defensive player, in an attempt to block, bat or catch a kick, may: 1. Step, jump or stand on a teammate (Rule 9-1-2-n). 2. Place a hand(s) on a teammate to get leverage for additional height. 3. Be picked up by a teammate, or be elevated, propelled, or pushed. PENALTY—15 yards from the previous spot [S27].
