So ZM is 3rd in yards, and YPG, OBJ is 1st in all purpose yards and 3rd in receiving, Landry 4th in receiving, but what made me pinch myself and think I woke up in a strange dream, we don't a player in the top 10 in tackles, tackles for a loss, and 1 guy in the top 10 in sacks with 1.5. Is this a result of our offense being able to sustain drives and eat up clock by not giving the ball back via punt?
I think it is what it looks like. The offense is impressive and the defense is competent but hasn't been exceptional in games against inferior competition. We are watching the Bizarro LSU Tigers. I think the defense will improve and find their groove. Hopefully this week.
Bingo...roughly 32 defensive players have stats showing. We have played 71 players in games this year. 15 True Freshmen and a bunch of Walk-on players.
We don't have playmakers on defense as of yet. And a potential playmaker in Loston could be more a liability than a help if he continues to play aggressive and dumb. So that's not a mirage. We do have issues on defense. We may have to end up being just a bend but don't break kind of defense. Teams moving on us between the 30s and then we stiffen up and force a FG attempt. I just don't see a bunch of turnovers being created by this team. Our best 2 players on defense are interior linemen, so that won't get you the big impact plays.
We haven't seen a full game by the starting 11. Like with anything, Chief wants to see some of the younger kids working in-game. Like I said before, he knows his starting 11, just wants to know who are his 11 back-ups... More on what I've been saying for a while, this was in todays paper........ We have been running a lot of base formations, K. Beckwith has played DE and all three LB'er positions. Beck doesn't know everything yet, but he does arrive in a hurry. This like the offense is far from finished, but I like the direction its heading. Looking at the first quarter of 3 games......LSU 48 pts. Opponents 3..... Chief has been doing this too long, way too long. He knows where he wants to go with this group.
Chavis has not shown any of his blitz packages yet. We have been able to hold opponents without blitzing. We've been able to play a lot of youngsters to get them broken in and so that Chief can observe the combinations. That should change in SEC play.
Lots of good points. No more 3 and outs lead to less time on the field for the defense, lots of defensive players getting their shot as Chavis sees who is ready etc. All of this adds up to the main overall point that should be made 1) Rumors of LSU's defense's demise have been greatly exaggerated.
