The SEC is expected to impose new media restrictions. I assume this applies to online clips as well. For game action as long as the SEC makes an effort and hosts decent clips themselves, I don't think it takes away much. I haven't really thought it through though, so maybe I am missing something. I guess the SEC will get into youtube policing though :/ For practice clips this sucks. WBRZ and WAFB both do a decent job on this. I guess we'll find out soon enough, but it looks like exposure will be limited even more than it already is. AP cliff notes: The Southeastern Conference is expected to impose rules that prohibit the news media from posting video from games, practices and news conference. The rules also limit televised highlights from games. They were released to member schools on Thursday and a copy was obtained by The Tuscaloosa News, which reported the new policies Friday. SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said the new restrictions are designed to protect the league's agreement with XOS Technologies for a new digital network. Bloom said the policy is subject to change. It limits TV stations from carrying clips of longer than three minutes and allows highlights to be aired for only 72 hours after a game ends. The SEC Digital Network is expected to launch in time for the upcoming football season. Florida Gators Country Football New SEC restrictions bad deal for fans Anyone? What are your thoughts?
I don't see how this will stop individuals from uploading clips to Youtube and other video sites. And Youtube's ongoing crackdown on copyrighted material has just made people more resistant. I can go there right now and find more full movies, TV shows, etc. than ever before. Is the SEC somehow going to police the video sites to the point of removing all the content? Even all the highlights from games from past seasons? Just like any entity that decides to get greedy with online distribution, the content will simply go underground and will be easily accessed anyway for free.
As expected, the SEC is already backing off. The age old adage of not getting into a war of words with someone who buys ink by the barrel is sinking in. This just isn't a winnable fight for the SEC... After backlash, SEC to tweak new media policy - al.com
And a stupid fight to even have started. I would like to know who the brain child was behind this idiotic media policy. The commish himself maybe?
According to that article the only provisions they are looking to change are the ones that effect the local media peeps. While it's a step it the right direction, it still screws the independent blogger like myself. But screw them, some policy isn't going to stop me from posting in game threads from my seat. I don't have season tix, so what are they gonna do?
