According to nfl.com, the Saints were attempting a sign-and-trade to bring in Clowney. They speculate that the other team involved was the Browns, who have tons of salary cap room and a willingness to be creative in their roster moves. The deal they were trying would have involved the Browns signing Clowney to a 1-year, $15 million deal that included a $5 million signing bonus. Once signed, they would have traded him to the Saints for a second round pick and a player to be named later. The Saints would then have only been on the hook for Clowney's $10 million salary, and gotten another salary off the books in the process.
Yall didn't think Goodell would let the saints come out ahead in any deal did ya. Plus we have a white qb with a guilt tour who probably suggested it. @fanatic on the same page.
