The win over Miami came in Payton's 100th game as a head coach. Jeff Duncan with the T-P put out this comparison of coaching greats at 100 games: Coach W/L/T Titles Playoff record Paul Brown 84-13-3 5 7-2 Don Shula 74-24-2 1 2-3 Vince Lombardi 73-24-3 3 5-4 John Madden 72-21-7 0 5-6 George Allen 72-23-5 0 2-4 Joe Gibbs 71-29-0 1 8-3 George Halas 70-15-15 1 0-0 Bud Grant 67-30-3 1 4-5 Sean Payton 66-34-0 1 5-3 Hank Stram 57-38-5 2 2-1 Chuck Noll 56-43-1 2 7-2 Bill Parcells 56-43-1 1 5-2 Bill Walsh 55-45-0 2 7-1 Weeb Ewbank 54-45-1 2 2-0 Sid Gillman 53-46-1 0 0-2 Marv Levy 44-56-0 0 0-0 Tom Landry 40-58-2 0 1-2 *Includes NFL, AFL & AAFC championships. How Payton ranks among active coaches with Super Bowl wins & at least 100 career games: Coach W/L Titles Playoff record Sean Payton 66-34-0 1 5-3 Mike McCarthy 65-35-0 1 5-3 Mike Shanahan 61-39-0 2 7-1 Tom Coughlin 58-42-0 0 4-4 Bill Belichick 42-58-0 0 1-1
In his last 50 games, not counting the two season ending games of 2009 and 2010 when he didn't play his starters or pulled them out of the game, the Saints are 41-9, only Bill Belichick is better over his last 50 games at 42-8. Payton has the Saints organization at the same level of success as the Patriots (and what the Colts were with Manning), winning between 11 and 13 games year in and year out. This will be the 4th straight season under Payton the Saints win at least 11 games, and will more than likely win in the neighborhood of 13 games, which would be the 3rd time he has done that in 4 years.
One more fun fact. Since 2008, the Saints have been competitive in 65 of their last 66 games (again not counting those two season ending games, even though the Tampa game was very competitive up until the end) under Sean Payton. All losses were within a 1 score deficit, except for 4 games. In 3 of those 4 games, the Saints had the ball with a chance to make it a 1 score game but threw game ending pick 6s (2008 Falcons, 2010 Browns, 2011 Rams). The only game in which the outcome was decided by the 4th quarter was the Carolina Panthers road game in 2008. And even in that game the score was only a 13-7 deficit at half. The Saints outgained Carolina that day by 7 yards.
What, you didn't like Carl Smith? I know Smith is the ass end of a lot of jokes by Saints fans and rightfully so, but his offense was more of a reflection of Mora's ultra conservative approach. With the defense we had back then and the best FG kicker in the league, he knew we didn't have to score a ton of TDs to win. It sure was frustrating to watch at times and the actual play calling could have been better. It used to piss me off so much when they would run and 1st and 2nd down, leaving a 3rd and 7, then completing a 5 yard route. Can you imagine having the Dome Patrol D with the Drew Brees/Sean Payton offense?
Sounds like a description of LSU under CLM 2008-2012, a dominating D w/a predictable, "do just enough" O.
