I guess he didn't fit into Rob Ryan's 3-4 scheme. I think it's strange that Will Smith was moved to OLB. I wouldn't be suprised if he were waived at some point in time this summer. I know he took a $6 million pay cut to stay with the team, but it looks like their may be some trouble brewing.... ...maybe I'm wrong.
The guy was a severe double-cripple when we took him 7th R (on a chance he could recover) and further crippled himself a year later. He would have been an outstanding fit for Rob Ryan's 3-4 before he got badly triple-crippled Because you're thinking 4-3 OLB instead of 3-4 OLB.
Actually, I think it makes even less sense in a 3-4. He's no wear near quick enough to be an OLB in a 3-4. Come to think of it, I don't think he's quick/fast enough to be an LB at all, in any scheme.
I was surprised they are giving him a go at OLB too. He isn't quick enough and his sack numbers suggest he is on the downside of his career. I know he took a pay cut, but if they truly intend to use him at OLB there are better options on the team already, and they cost less. I don't think he is a good fit for the scheme. He isn't a big DE and he isn't quick enough to be an OLB.
