Yep, the DL that everyone thought would turn our run stopping problem around hasn't materialized. Even when the big DT gets penetration the opponents RB seems to cut back to daylight or run around them. Unless we stunt, blitz or use some type of deception we seem vulnerable on defense. I was hoping the new personnel would have a bigger impact overall. Our offense played better, but our receivers weren't wide open. Drew picked on a rookie corner and often threw to guys who were well covered, but were able to make catches through back shoulder catches, etc.. Maybe having Lance Moore would have helped.
Agreed. The defensive line didn't seem to get too much penetration at all. The only LB worth a sh*t is Vilma of course. Saints management need to go out and spend the money necessary to get some big time defenders, not people past their prime.
Going to wait for the season to get going before I start predicting the demise of the saints. Spent some money, made some moves on the defensive side and they don't have to be great with a great offense. I saw Houston push them around pretty good, the 2nd game should be telling.
gregg williams would be a fool to tip his hand on his stunt packages and what not. it's the preseason, we'll see a completely different defense come the regular season and i'm excited to see just how aggressively GDub calls his defense. with the pieces we have this year and the vulnerability in the LB corps, i'm expecting a lot of pressure coming from all angles to help stop the run and put our secondary in a better position to create havoc a la 2009.
They are going to have to blitz, because so far the front four is getting very little push. Problem is those blitzes sometimes turn short runs into big gainers. It happened several times in the Oakland game. Hopefully the poor play has a lot to do with the vanilla D, but it has me concerned.
Totally agree, this is the worry. Our base defense isn't getting it done. Remember how the New York Giants defense stopped the Patriots in the SuperBowl? It was with their front 4. The Patriots were undefeated and racking up obscene offensive stats, but the Giants stifled there offense because they were able to get pressure on Brady by using predominantly 4 rushers. This allowed everyone else maximum coverage and suddenly Brady had no where to throw the ball. Same rule applies. If your front four and base defense can handle the run and pass without constantly resorting to trickery, blitzes, man on man coverage with top tier WR's, etc., you have a tremendous advantage.
