To the Redskins. Not crazy about it. We basically get whatever the Eagles don't get for McNabb's trade. Eagles conditional pick is 3rd rounder if Redskins make the playoffs or win 9 games or McNabb makes Pro Bowl. Otherwise, they only get a 4th rounder and the Saints in turn will get the 3rd rounder. So basically we decide the Eagles draft compensation and we get the other pick.
So we want both the Eagles and the Skins to suck next year? Shouldn't be a problem with the way the Cowboys are looking.
Exactly. All of the conditions tied to McNabb's performance is crazy. Seems the most we could possibly get is a 3rd, then we turn around and give them a 5 or 6? What's the point? Seems like we could've gotten more for him.
Pretty good trade if you ask me. We just dumped a guy coming off knee and hernia surgery and who wanted a long term contract for a 4th round pick at worse. If McNabb doesn't make the Pro Bowl and the Redskins has an 8-8 season or worse (both pretty good bets) then it's a 3rd for our 5th round pick. Also, consider that after this season Brown was most likely gone meaning the Saints would have gotten nothing for him at all while carrying him on the roster for a full year.
On the other hand, we got no more than a 3rd rounder for an established starting left tackle and former Pro Bowler who (as far as age is concerned) is in his prime. The injuries didn't help his value, nor has his refusal to participate in minicamps or OTA's, but I think we could have done a little better. We should have at least gotten two picks if we couldn't get anything higher than a 3rd rounder.
I think we got low value for him because teams were looking at the fact that he was coming off of 2 operation and hadn't played in a year more than his former pro bowl seasons. The part of the trade that bothers me isn't that we only got a 3rd or 4th rounder but that we have to give back a 5th or 6th rounder. I think where his value really dropped was his attitude. Not signing his tender, not showing up for mini camp or OTA's, and worst of all I think I read that he didn't even show up for the ring ceremony. I think even Charles Grant who was flat out cut showed up. You have a possible once in a lifetime opportunity to be with your team to receive a SB ring and you skip it? The Skins may have just acquired Hainsworth the 2nd.
First of all, he's not established any more. He was not going to beat out Bushrod and you minimize the severity of his injuries. Personally, I'm surprised that we got anything for him. If he had not been injured, we could have gotten a 2nd round pick, but no better. We've been shopping him since the Superbowl. I doubt Loomis would have passed up a better deal for this offer, meaning it's unlikely that we could have gotten a better deal. It's not everyday that a team shops a Pro Bowl LT and for there to be so little interest is very telling. The thing is that Brown's knees have been degenerating for some time now so it's more likely that Brown's Prime has ended. As the late, great Bill Walsh once said: "Better to trade a player too soon rather than too late."
