I like that attitude, but I was really disappointed in how they played today. Although it's early in the season, they would have been firmly in control of the division had they won. Of course, they knew this too, so it's hard to understand the lackluster effort.

I will say this, that defense is not championship caliber. We give up way too many big plays. Our run blocking sucks too. This is probably the most perplexing part of the whole team. With all the weapons we have at receiver, you'd think by spreading a defense out across the field would create natural running lanes for our backs. Sproles had had a few big runs, but that's about it. I'm still waiting on Ingram to have a breakout game. He's a hard, physical runner, but there's only so much you can do with no holes to run through.

Lastly, I think we've become too predictable on offense. I'm not sure what impact Payton's injury had on his playcalling, but if you're to believe the broadcasters covering the game, several times TB audibled to a new defense at the line of scrimmage when seeing the formation the Saints were in. This happened most notably right before half time, when TB audibled from a blitz to zone and stopped a screen pass that held us to a FG. The play most likely would have worked, had they stayed in a blitz.

Good news is, we have to Colts and Rams the next 2 weeks. I don't anticipate either one of these being easy games, but they are games we should win.

After that is a rematch with the Bucs in the Dome; a place where they've beaten us 3 out of the last 4 years, so they better be ready. Lose that one and TB has all the tiebreaking edges on you, should it come down to that.

    That is all...

It will take more than one flat effort and one loss to discourage me about this team. But the shortcomings on the defensive side of the ball are obvious. If we don't come out and put up a quick lead and force opponents to go one-dimensional, our defense is very vulnerable. Our LBs stink, Rogers and Franklin are not earning their money yet in the middle, and our pass rush is so bad, QB's are running skeleton drills against our secondary.

Didn't mean to imply I had given up on them. We've had season tickets since before the Payton era, so we've been through the lean years. Not like these 'fans' that have come out of the woodwork since 2009 (not impying either of you are like this. I know from my 8 years on this board that you guys are true fans.)

As for Evans and Nicks, do you think it's a coincidence that - ever since they got the big contracts, production in the running games to their sides has declined? I don't. In fact, I remember Payton putting Nicks with the 2nd string during training camp this year because he wasn't happy with his effort. Get rich and get lazy. I have no problem with their pass blocking. For the most part, they've protected Drew very well. But I wonder when Payton will give a hungry Brian Dela Puenta (sp?), who played excellent spelling Kreutz, or Matt Tennant a shot. Maybe not start them, but give them some PT just to see what they can do.

I didn't watch but to turn the ball over 4 times (as I repeatedly heard at work today) and only lose by 6??? Seems like they'd have to have played well.

Buzz is increasing about Evans and Nicks not earning their pay so far this year. There may be something to it. There must be reasons why the Saints run blocking is lacking. Buzz about Kreutz being terrible is increasing, again, seems like there are valid reasons for this.

I was around when the Saints were born. I loved seeing games in Tulane Stadium and my family had season tickets during those years and into the first years of the Superdome.

I don't think that anyone would say that the Saints played well yesterday vs the Bucs. Certainly nobody on the Saints team would say that. I would not say that.

However, the Saints seemed to me to play hard, fight with the heart of a tiger, and never gave up trying to win the game. I believe this is why they lost by only 6 points.

Well, they gave up 10 pts off those turnovers and lost by 6, so that's definitely the difference in the game. But, they couldn't run the ball (70 yards) or stop the run (117 yards) even with Legarrett (sp?) Blount out of the lineup. That was the disappointing thing to me.

The Saints never showed up for the game. The Rams played the NORD Saints.
