With the recent free-agent addition of veterans Darren Sharper and Pierson Prioleau, things were beginning to get crowded in the interior of the New Orleans Saints' secondary, so team officials thinned the bunch on Thursday by releasing free safety Kevin Kaesviharn.

The eight-year veteran spent his last two seasons with the Saints after six years with the Cincinnati Bengals. He signed a four-year contract with New Orleans as a free agent in 2007 and had two years left on that deal. Kaesviharn was a scheduled to earn total compensation of $1.6 million in 2009.

Sharper is expected to start along with Roman Harper at safety, and the veteran Prioleau, a longtime special teams standout, will probably be the principal backup at both positions.

Kaesviharn, 32, started 11 games at free safety last season before missing the final five contests with a neck injury. He had 64 tackles, two interceptions, in four passes defensed.

New Orleans officials made upgrading the safety position in offseason priority.

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced on Friday afternoon that the club has agreed to terms with free agent defensive tackle Roderick (Rod) Coleman on a one-year contract.

Coleman, 32, did not play in 2008 after being released by the Atlanta Falcons on February 18, 2008. The 6-2, 285-pound product of East Carolina University is a nine-year NFL veteran who originally broke into the NFL as a fifth-round draft choice of the Oakland Raiders in 1999. After four seasons in the Silver-and-Black, Coleman moved via free agency to the Atlanta Falcons, where he played from 2004-2007.

With Sharper, Prioleaux and Coleman, one thing's for certain, we've certainly gotten older on defense. We'll see if that's a good thing or not, but where Sharper's concern, I have no doubt.

ESPN Radio' "The Huddle" just did a nice segment on Sharper, analyzing the move to NO and what he does for us, followed by an interview. One of the analysts suggested that DS will be "the missing link" for the Saints to become contenders, and with his knowledge and leadership skills, will quickly become the quarterback of our defense. DS said he's looking forward to taking on that role, and that if teams try to beat us deep this year, his int. numbers will definitely go up.

they way he tears the Saints up I wish the Saints do have a true proven number 1 WR, but I wouldn't mind Maclin either. Oakland , Bears or Vikings may be looking at him they need WRs but Bears probably dont have anything to offer. Larry Johnson maybe too.

Jets thinking about signing Miles Austin which would give the Cowboys a 2nd Round.....they could have Lance Moore for that but I guess i'll just keep dreamin

Dallas Cowboys restricted free agent wide receiver Miles Austin visited the Jets Friday contrary to an earlier report.

The Jets didn't sign Austin, a former Monmouth University star, to an offer sheet but the meeting went well and the Jets told Austin that they plan to put together one in the coming days, according to a person with knowledge of the talks.

If the Cowboys doesn't match the offer, they would receive a second-round pick from the Jets as compensation. Dallas has extended a one-year, $1.54 million tender offer to Austin.

Although the restricted free agent signing period ends on April 17th, the Jets can sign Austin to an offer sheet anytime before then and the Cowboys will then have seven days from that point to match the offer.

While the Jets clearly like Austin, they are said to be hesitant about parting with a second-round pick, which would be 52nd overall. Austin, however, appears to be as good or better than any receiver the Jets could get in the second round.

It'll be interesting to see if Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum dreams up a creative offer sheet, one that may include a diabolical ``poison pill,'' a clause designed to make it virtually impossible for a team to match.

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints have signed free-agent linebacker Anthony Waters, the team announced Wednesday.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis didn't disclose terms of the deal.

Waters, who is entering his third NFL season, spent two years with the San Diego Chargers after being selected by the team in the third round of the 2007 draft.
