In 2006, that was the high point for both. LSU plays in the Sugar Bowl and beat the living crap out of Notre Dame and finish #3 in the final rankings. The Saints meanwhile are on a bye week readying themselves for the playoffs and make it to the NFC CG and get within playing a good 4th quarter away from making it to the Super Bowl. That's gonna be hard to beat.
That's the first time in history that has happened. In 1998, both LSU and the Saints started off 3-0 (and both lost their 4th game), but that's the closest we came to what we have now with Saints 4-0, LSU 5-0. In Saints history, it's only the 3rd time that they started off 4-0. They've only made it to 3-0 five times in history.
Yeah I didn't answer his question. I mistook it to mean when has it been this good with both teams doing well and I gave him an end of the season result rather than a start of the season result. So John has the info correct.
Also should be noted the LSU championship was in 2008 following the 2007 season, not the 2006 season. 2006 was the year LSU finished with the Sugar Bowl win against Notre Dame.
In 2002, the Saints and Tigers were both 6-1 and looking good for postseason... We ended up with 8 wins and the Saints with 9 and missing the playoffs.
Just looked it up and good grief, what a meltdown of a season. Lost the last 3 to go 9-7. Checked out the boxscore of the Minnesota game and we were up 31-24 and Minnesota tied it up late and went for 2 to win the game and made it. 32-31 Vikings. Anybody remember that? I remember the Carolina game to end the season. A win and we're in the playoffs. Brooks just totally stunk up the joint at home. Carolina was horrible and had nothing to play for and Brooks just acted like he didn't care.
