brodhead was ahead of his time. Belived in having a progressive atheltic department not one that is ran by Charlie Cusimono and his golf buddies. Emmert shared a similar vison
I'd add another "thumbs up" to the book. Even 20 years after his time at LSU, this book is still an interesting read and a look into the world behind the scenes at LSU. Love him or hate him, his hires produced. If I'm not mistaken, he hired Bertman, Gunter, Arnsparger, Pat Henry and Buddy Alexander (former golf coach who followed Arnparger to Florida and won the US Amateur while LSU's golf coach) among others.
After being fired from LSU, Bob cam to work for my grandfather. I was young at the time (around 9 or 10), but I remember him as a very nice guy who knew business like the pope knows catholicism. He wrote the book while working for my families business. I have several autographed copies of his book laying around somewhere. He really did get a raw deal. Bob hired most of the best coaches we've ever had at LSU. He attempted to get rid of the good ole' boy system we had, and turn the program into a money making machine... He deserves some credit. I went to his funeral several years ago. It was a pitiful sight. There might have been 30 people there. It's a shame our good old boy system got the best of him.
221 pages of what LSU did wrong in the late 80's-around 2000. I meet Bob a number of times while he was at LSU and he was always friendly and was thinking ahead. I have to say LSU SID Joe Yates, and his two ass. Snookie Newman and Jimmy Hyams are some of the people I miss at LSU. When you read the book, the person I was closest to at LSU at that time was Jimmy and did a number of small jobs reseraching odd LSU facts in football and basketball.
who hired Curly Hallman? I forgot. There was also the demand from the players that Archer be hired after Arnsbarger left. I remember that because I was in school at the time and knew a few players. Worked out ok for a couple of years, but then came Curly. The worst coach in LSU's modern history. The BOS must have been involved in Hallman's hiring. I clearly remember it was Dean who hired Dinardo. Definitely Emmert who was responsible for Saban and SKip hired Miles.
Wow... sorry to be only about three years late in replying to this thread (laugh), but I just found and joined TigerForums.com! Greetings. I worked with Bob Brodhead at WIBR in the early 90s, and wound up over time having numerous copies of "Sacked!" thrown at me for various reasons because the old Port Allen studios were where he stored a major cache of them <chuckle>. Somewhere in storage in my attic, I'm pretty sure I have something like 15 copies of the darned thing that I just couldn't come to sell or toss after Bob's passing. They're not doing me much good just sitting there taking up space, having said that. If anyone's still after a copy of "Sacked!" and can't find one, let me know and if and when I can find my supply of them, I'll be happy to mail you a copy. It might have been one I got from him as a promo to hand out anyway, or it might have been a copy he gave me to use as a doorstop for the newsroom door one morning-- luck of the draw!
I read the book shortly after it came out (a long time ago). Brodhead was a business man and brought the business aspect to LSU, especially in football, like taking over the concessions, etc. Taught LSU how to make more money. He rubbed the board wrong, though. It was a good read but more for those that knew and remember him.
