Saban's media comments vital to Utah's win over Bama

I must say that I am really surprised by this. For all of my criticism of Saban, the one thing I always gave him credit for was media smart and savvy. He never used to say anything that would give his opponent emotional motivation which I believe is one of the most underrated and important aspects to football. It's why I was so pissed at RJF opening his mouth about Tebow and Florida and something I'd like to see Miles get a little better at.

You could see it from the opening kickoff. Utah had a chip on their shoulder and wanted the game more than Bama did.

Saban is a technically sound football coach that knows X's and O's. The one aspect that I think he misses about football is the emotional one. He tries to be all business all the time. While I think that is a god way to be most of the time sometimes a coach needs to know how to rile the beast up in his players to get them to perform. Saban lacks that ability.

Saban did not have his players emotionally ready nor was HE ready for the schemes Utah threw at him last night. Defintely got OUTCOACHED at EVERY LEVEL of the game last night.

Imagine that.................an underdog using emotion to win a game.
Works all the time in college, can't figure out what they do in the NFL.:geaux:

gotta agree, that's not like Saban. He definitely slipped up making that comment.

But I don't think the whole loss can be pinned on that. Bama's been lucky with injuries all year, except for Cody, they've been injury free. They have no depth and it got exposed in the bowl game.

And he usually is. I suspect that Nick was lobbying for BCS quality points at the time, not thinking of Utah as a potential opponent. A small tactical mistake, but it snowballed on him.

That style has always worked for him, though. His teams are businesslike and pro-style and he wins with that. Emotional teams can pull off upsets, like Utah did . . . but they can also come out "flat" and never get into the game, like LSU did more than once this year. It's a rare coach who can get consistent businesslike consistency from his team and still be able to get the team psyched up for big games without ever being undermotivated against some perceived patsy.

I think Les has balanced those requirements well, playing consistently and getting fired up for big games. This season was the first time we've seen "flat" games from this team.

Well, that happens to all coaches from time to time. I don't think Nick has any more or less of those games than anyone else. But he surely had one last night.

    Freudian slip?

Things that make you go, hmmmmm. I didn't see the presser. Figured he'd hold it together. Sounds like he was close to another meltdown. We watched the game outside at an Uptown bar. The whole place was in shock, but only momentarily as no one really gave a ****.

I agree. I think the perfect combination would be a coach that take Saban's business-like approach for most games and combines it with a more emotional coaching style for certain games when necessary. That was obviously what Bama needed last night.

That still doesn't explain the fact that Saban wasn't ready for Utah's schemes last night.

He mentioned in the pc he probably kept his defensive plan to simple and should of made it a little more complex. True maybe but that still doesn't solve the poor coverage and tackling.

Saban's press conferences, he has regressed in recent years. It's almost like the Miami debacle has shot his confidence in front of the mic, like he's reliving the embarrassment of leaving Miami. I could be wrong, but he used to do better when he was here. He just doesn't look like a happy man to me. I could actually feel sorry for him after last night's press conference after the game.

When you contrast that to Miles PC before the SECCG when denying the Mich. rumor, Les had some fire in his belly, showed emotion and confidence. That was a great PC. Les continues to grow on me. This season was a disappointment in my book, but no coach will pull all the correct strings every year. But I like Les.

Agreed. I liked having Saban as our coach, to a degree. He brought us back to prominence, but he wasn't likeable.

I absolutely love Les Miles. I think he blends in perfectly with a crazy south Louisiana fanbase.
