i dont think he left miami because he could not coach defense. they were #4 in the league and jason taylor won the mvp. i think jarrett lee was their qb, too.

Link? To me, bottom line is if Saban was a "great defensive" coach, he wouldn't have sold out Miami or himself and his dreams of being a great NFL coach.

I appreciate that you regard me as an "lsu company man" but I was never in love with Saban at LSU and it didn't bother me when he left. But I did think he was a very good coach for us. And I felt the same way about Dinardo (and it didn't bother me when he left, either). I've met Saban and he was a really cool, humble guy to me.

Regarding the LSU people who did fall in love with Saban, I have sympathy for them. Like a post I was reading elsewhere recently said in response to Bama fans talking smack about how LSU fans are jealous that Bama has Saban: We treated Saban well and this sizeable percentage of LSU fans literally feel in love with him, and then he takes a job with one of our biggest SEC-West Rivals. That was not a cool move and certainly Bama fans can understand that. I forget exactly how the guy put it (he worded it a lot better than I did just there), but all the Bama wrote back that, yes, they did understand that.

Saban no longer being a defensive coach in the NFL has nothing to do with his defensive coaching ability. What it has to do with is Bama's willingness to offer him $32 million to be their head coach for 8 years. Anyone know a NFL DC making that kind of jack? Plus he gets to go back to the college environment where he can exhibit his true personality and scream at kids and they can't tell him to go to hell. I doubt that going to an SEC W rival of the Tigers was his first choice, but for those kind of dollars, you gotta do what you gotta do.

To the original point, ya gotta admit the gump D is playing very well.

Saban's dream was to be a great NFL head coach, not demoted to some DC. Yeah, he was an absolute failure, so he went to Bama, another absolute failure. It was a good match.

If not for Saban's defensive genius, we would have lost that Iowa game.
