9'-6' merica Sun. singles @RyderCup: Reed/McIlroy, Spieth/Stenson, Holmes/Pieters, Fowler/Rose, Walker/Cabrera Bello, Mickelson/Garcia, Moore/Westwood Snedeker/Sullivan, D Johnson/Wood, Koepka/Willett, Kuchar/Kaymer, Z Johnson/Fitzpatrick Reed/McIlroy and lefty/Sergio Should be epic.
I've been watching golf for 50+ years. That was the greatest Ryder Cup I've watched. Match play at its finest. The Reed - McIlroy match was a classic. The USA was better in the 6 - 12 positions and it showed today.
agreed they didnt necessarily lose it (*), we just took it while the match that will be talked about for a very long time will be mcilroy vs reed, the greatest match in singles history was played yesterday between phil and sergio. they combined for 19 birdies. 19. and appropriately they halved the point. it was arguably the greatest round of golf by both players, given the circumstances. btw, the putt made by reed to answer mcilroy on the 8th hole caused the crowd to go insane so much so that phil had to back off his putt on the 3rd hole. (*) had lee westwood not utterly choked on putts in both his last team match on saturday and in his singles match on sunday, europe would have won 2 more points and closed the gap to 15-13, putting an enormous amount of pressure on the closing groups on sunday. at that point all it would have taken was for DJ to choke his match away for us to blow it again. not sure why we did not invite lee in the post match press conference as honorary mvp. could have sung ole ole ole song with him hoisted in the air. would have been cool.
You could see Sergio's frustration. He kept beating Phil from tee to green, and then would have to watch Phil bomb putt after putt to salvage halves.
The first 8 holes in the Reed/Rory match, especially 5-8, was the best golf performance/show I've ever seen in golf. With all the build-up/hype for that match, if definitely didn't disappoint. It may have even exceeded expectation. Next to Tiger, Patrick Reed is by far my favorite golfer. When Reed walked off the 8th green, waggling his finger at Rory like Mutombo used to do after blocking someone's shot, he basically told Rory you can bring everything you got but you ain't beating me today. I think Rory even realized that and subsequently went in the tank immediately after. It was an EPIC showdown. Hope it was the first of many.
Phil was in the zone with the putter. He was making them putts on sure will. I know Phil is not the type of person Reed is, but I wish for one day he would've had the bravado and showing off like Reed. That would've been great to see, especially against that bafoon they call Sergio. But nonetheless, it was a great match.
