Anyone see the jack Ryan Howard hit last night? Nothing like a 500+ft bomb. What are some of the longest HRs you've ever seen? I saw McGwire hit one over the Marlboro man in left-center at the old Busch stadium. They estimated it at 525ft. Brandon Larson's HR in the '97 CWS. I'm not sure how far it went, but it had to be close to 500ft.
I saw Charlton Jimerson hit one out of the Dell Diamond a couple of years ago that, at last word, is still in the air. Longest ball I've seen hit there. And for longball history. Saw this the other day when reading about old ballparks. Only 4 players hit it into the centerfield bleachers at the Polo Grounds, a very strangely configured field . One of them was former LSU star Joe Adcock. The others were Lou Brock, Hank Aaron, and a Negro League player I can't remember.
more remarkable is he is the fastest ever to 100 homers beating out ralph kiner from the 40's. 100 homers in 325 career games -- 60 less games than it took Pirates' Kiner. prince fielder is ryan howard of last year. wait til matures. he just turned 23.
i know you watch SNY, ever see kiner on there? i love the guy, but i am sad to say the spirit of the crypt keeper took over his body after it left sue gunter's. the guy is walking death. howard has to be frustrated thome held him back so long. i have read that statheads project that howard's massive body type will not hold up. he will be more mo vaughn than a-rod. we shall see i guess. as for the longest hrs i have ever seen, probably a couple i saw bonds just absolutely blast out of shea two seasons ago. and piazza has popped a few way over the left field bleachers at shea. i would like to see big papi in person, but that would probably require going to yanqui stadium.
They moved the fence often. Here's what it was when the 4 were hit. 484' Luke Easter, Negro League, 1948 480' Joe Adcock, April 29, 1953 475' Lou Brock, June 17, 1962 475' Hank Aaron, June 18, 1962 That's a pretty good lick. :thumb:
i obviously didn't see this one in person, but Reggie Jackson hitting it out of the stadium in that all-star game was unbelievable. that has to be 600+ feet. Ryan Howard is the little brother of Chris Howard, who is an associate athletic director in the LSU athletic building. Chris told me the last time I saw him that Ryan will make it to 2-3 home games this season depending on when his season ends.
biggio gets 3000 on the same day. 3 hits tonight. although thrown out by a mile at 2nd trying to get a double. big hurt was ejected in his milestone arguing strikes.
yes and its pretty sad. I feel sorry for him everytime they show him. He sounds bad now too which is a bad sign. this is true. i didnt even think about that. i think hes turning 27 this year and they held him back saying he wasnt quite ready forever. complete bs obviously because of thome. this is true. same with prince fielder. hes going to be even fatter as time goes on as he is only 23. the fact so many guys always in shape like beltran or chipper always having leg problems is not unique. its amazing to me these guys break down this way simply playing baseball. I cant even imagine how many more games guys like them 2 beasts will miss because of it. then years when eventually cut short and having to retire. its one of the more puzzling things I cant figure out. I can understand football or even basketball just not baseball. the longest i think i remember is the juiced player/juiced ball era in coors w/o the humidor. the bichetta/big cat/vinny castilla bombs on a nightly basis was something to behold. piazza hit some huge bombs in his prime even at chavez. papi has hit some that seem to never come down but in that short porch at fenway, its hard to tell. i did like his viagra commercial in the dominican he was pimping. its pretty funny even if you dont understand the language.
