Combines are overrated. Playing speed is much different than combine speed. Zach Thomas was supposed to be too slow because of his combine time, he wasnt quick enough, etc. Yet he is has had a HOF career. He is football quick and takes excellent angles, he reads and reacts as well as any LB ever. He even caught Emmit Smith from behind. Combines are a tool to guage, but too much emphasis is put on combines.
Were you joking about this or were you serious????:shock: You tend to worry about some pretty weird, orbitrary things... Do you REALLY believe that players at this level are intimidated or not intimidated by the look of their opponent??? Does the look of someone make them less of a player???? Hester wouldn't be worth a damn...how many white running backs to you see playing in the national title game???
I was obviously joking. I must remember to put a smiley face next time to indicate that fact. No, I have played sports enough to know that your face and how you carry yourself off the field, ring, etc. have nothing to do with whether you are a good player. My thoughts ran to Odom (I think that was his name) who we recruited, and how mean his face looked by contrast. It means nothing, I have beaten some more muscular, mean looking guys that were bigger, etc., but when crunch time came they didn't want it bad enough and couldn't handle the pain. I have seen some world champions that are thin and unassuming, but the average person, significantly outweighing them would be in serious trouble if they attacked them with out a gun. No, I know better than most that a mean looking face means absolutely nothing.
No it isn't a joke. I already said I knew he was considered a top flight LB. I spoke about numbers quoted by scout. I even asked if they were a misprint. I think it is worth at least mentioning on this board that our most highly rated LB recruit has recorded very slow numbers at a combine. Usually when you see a round number, such as 4.45 reported in a 40 it is not a true clocked time, but an estimate which is often fudged. If you have other actual combine numbers please post them. I also thanked a poster for showing us some film which made Baker look great. As I said he took a bee line to ball carriers and showed great balance when he carried the ball. But it is news worthy when your star recruit runs drills at the same speed as 300 lb linemen. I should be able to post what are reported as facts without getting blasted. Don't kill the messenger!
