Broken jaws take a few weeks to heal. I imagine you wouldn't want to rush back to such a physical position in a contact sport.
for sure, but it's not like it's something that will be subject to direct contact all the time. you wouldn't want it to get knocked around before it the bone can set in place, but i'm not sure why he'd be out more than 2-3 weeks. unless it's just precautionary and they feel it's a good idea to get some younger guys in.
I never played football, but I don't think that I'd want a chinstrap connecting the helmet to my healing fracture.:dis:.
Getting rocked in the chin is a perpetual danger on any play. Until the bone is fully healed, you cannot play. This is not basketball.
i'm not sure i would either, but these days are obviously vastly different from the days my grandpa told me stories of playing with broken bones, etc. but then again, he passed up playing SEC ball because he had to go to work and make a living.
Depends on where it is and how severe. Rickey Jackson broke his jaw in a car accident in the early '90's and had his jaw wired shut, a special facemask made and didn't miss a game. Keith Rivers, LB for the Bengals, had a broken jaw (from a hit by Hines Ward if I'm not mistaken) and was out for a period of time. Joseph Barksdale had his jaw broken by Troy Giddens (sucker punched) remember? Not sure if it was in the spring or not, but he didn't miss a lot of time if I remember.
I agree. And unlike my examples in the post above (with the exception of Barksdale), they were all pros...not college players. As much as he would likely help the team, I wouldn't want to see him mess it up further by rushing back.
Pros Right after he got here, and long before he had to play. Can't lose sight that these kids are playing under the liability of LSU. I would imagine serious precautions would be taken to avoid any lawsuits.
