Russia gets jobs whil Obama sleeps

While the Obama Administration refuses to capitalize on offshore drilling opportunities for the United States, Russia recently concluded four contracts in the Gulf of Mexico, securing oil-exploration rights in Cuba's economic zone. The Russian-Cuban partnership is expected to exploit oil found in the deep waters of the Gulf.

Russia is making this move in the Gulf of Mexico because it makes economic sense. Offshore production creates jobs, enhances our economic security and generates wealth in this much needed time of massive deficits. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration doesn't seem to get this.

With the 2007-2012 offshore leasing program stuck in administrative limbo, Interior Secretary Salazar is continuing to slow-walk lease sales and an offshore production program for the next five years.

In less than two years the administration has done everything in its power to slow domestic onshore production, is slow-walking domestic offshore production, is looking at issuing a litany of new regulations from several agencies to cripple all domestic production, and is now sitting back as Russia begins production in the Gulf and China continues to secure resources all over the world.

Last year I introduced the No Cost Stimulus Act as a way of increasing domestic production and streamlining review processes that the administration is using as a tool to block more domestic production. Both the Clinton and Bush Administrations understood that domestic production was imperative to creating jobs and generating wealth as a nation. Watching Russia move into the Gulf to produce energy as this administration does nothing is going to be crippling to our future economic and energy freedom.

I'm all for increased offshore drilling, the technology is mature, the safety and pollution issues are under control, and the reservoirs are gettable. Left and right coasters that don't want it offshore their own waters come from both sides of the aisle, but this needs to happen.

But . . . it's not like we were going to get to drill on Cuba's continental shelf anyway, not while Fidel lives. The Russians have been there a long time.

I'm sure the government knows what they're doing. A tidbit:

The Department of Energy was created in 1977 to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. It has ballooned to 16,000 employees with a budget of $24 billion a year and we import more oil than ever before. They had 32 years to get it right and it is an abysmal failure.
