Cy Ridge won 43-41 Rushing: 254 yards, 2TD's Passing: 7-19, 163 yards, 2TD's One pass was for 99 yards. He ran one TD for 50 yards.
am I still in the minority that thinks a kid who was 7-19 in a high school game at QB can't be a QB in the SEC? I don't want to sound like a hater or anything, but Perrilloux would regularly be dropping 35-42 or 28-34, etc...
You assume all offenses, and players are equal to your experience, when they obviously are not. His team has alway been a dominant running team, not passing, though that was supposed to change a bit this year. You also had the luxury of personally watching RP play in high school. Ever been to one of Shep's games? He is severely limited by the type of offense his coaches continue to run, the receivers he has to work with, and the level of competition he faces, which is far tougher than RP faced in high school. This guy has spent the last year working with professional qbs and qb coaches to improve a skill he obviously gets little opportunity to fine tune while playing for his team. Something few players would do, and certainly RP never did. Perhaps you should wait until he gets to LSU and has a chance to work out before you start doubting him. I have seen him play in person, and am quite impressed with his arm, and his head, in addition to his character. Something I might add, RP never had.
East St. John was a pass happy school too. I think Perrilloux went from Curtis to there early on because Curtis told him they were going to run the ball no matter what.
I don't think you're wrong for thinking that right away but we're in a position that we don't nec. have to be FORCED into using him in the passing game right way until he gets his passing game up to par. With Lee as the better-equipped "passer" on the roster for the forseeable future, you'll see Shepard possibly redshirt (since we'll have Lee, Hatch and Jefferson) and then see the young duel-threat phenom enter the game occassionally for certain plays (once he adds some weight to his frame that is)...or perhaps a package of plays designed with him and Jefferson in mind. Also, while I can't be certain because I haven't seen his team play (naturally), while 7 for 19 doesn't appear impressive, how much of that was WR drops, etc.? You know--things that are attributed negatively to the QB, but definately not his fault?
Right now he looks simply way too good to redshirt, almost like Ohio St. with Pryor where they had Boeckman and Henton but he's too good to redshirt. But we'll see.
You can put all the nuances you want on it, but anyone who completes only 4 out of 10 passes is not going to make it in the SEC. Not as a quarterback.
I think Shepard will be a dynamic QB that will be really hard to stop. The next Vince Young, but more polished.
