Also, they can be coached up- look at how far Tebow came in one year. People didn't give him much chance cause "he couldn't pass" the ball. He threw for over 3,000 yards.
He still isn't a very good passer, but his running ability combined with Percy Harvin allows him to get away with mediocre accuracy.
Scrambling is important, but we don't want a run-first QB. Sure, they can succeed, but we've got too many weapons (at RB & WR) to have a QB that doesn't put them in position to succeed.
That may be a little harsh. UF Records: -Most 200 yard passing games, season: 11, tied with 3 others –Highest completion pct, season: 66.9% –2nd in passing efficiency, season: 172.5 –2nd in yards per game, season: 321.6 –2nd in ratio of att/ints, season: 1 every 58.3 attempts –4th in TD passes, season: 32 –4th in passing yards, season: 3286 SEC Records: –2nd in passing efficiency, season: 172.5 –2nd in most points, season: 138 –3rd in completion pct, season: 66.9% –5th in yards per game, season: 321.6 –7th in TD passes, season: 32 –7th in ratio of att/ints, season: 1 every 58.3 attempts –14th in passing yards, season: 3286
i would agree that tebow is great also as a passer but i wish he put up those numbers outside of the SEC
I'm not saying that Tebow is a poor passer and certainly not that he's a poor QB. I'm merely saying that he has average to below average accuracy, but that his running ability along with Percy Harvin & the scheme that UF runs allow him to put up great stats. Statistics prove nothing of accuracy. Tebow is not a run-first QB except for when it's called for by the coaches. Perrilloux is the same way. These guys can run, which makes them a dangerous weapon, but they are passing QB's first & foremost. As I've mentioned, I really haven't seen enough film on Shepard to know for sure, but the highlight film that I saw showed a run-first QB, similar to a Pat White. This is not what LSU needs. However from all indications, our coaches really want him as a QB. Hopefully Rivals will get some senior film of him & showcase his throwing ability.
He does have it. :hihi: >TigerBait's Tool, Timmy< Yeah, I bet he couldn't do that in the Big 10. I hope Russell Shepard has it too. I'm not familiar with his productivity, mechanics, style, etc. but have been seeing some say he's a good passer too and others say different. Have to go with the coaches and hope/believe he'll be LSU caliber. People forget so easy, like with J. Lee. So many feel like we could be doomed if RP didn't return and we had go with him. I was telling a friend today that he was like the #2 QB in Texas behind Mallet in that class and he couldn't believe that.
Speaking of Tebow: I agree that it's best to have a QB that can do more than run. My point is that to be successful in major college football, you don't need an NFL quality passer. You need someone that can pass *good enough*. For example, in college I would rather have Charlie Ward over Eli Manning, Eric Crouch over Brian Greise, Pat White over Ben Roethlisberger, etc. (In the NFL you would obviously rather have the other guys.) Hopefully Russell Shepard will be a "good enough" passer at worst. (And we land him.) I agree that a primarily running quarterback is far from ideal with talent LSU has at RB and WR.
