Who is going down in denial? Somebody has asserted that Russell did well at oakland? The disagreement is how he performed here at LSU. You said he "sucked then" but his numbers prove otherwise. Heck his numbers as a sophomore were better than Flynn's. Flynn won a NC but he also had two losses just like the 2 yrs before when Russell was leading the team. As anyone can acknowledge, we were more than fortunate to be in the NC game, and I wouldn't attribute that to Flynn's performance. I thought Flynn did pretty well but I don't think that he was better than Russell.

Again, how do you conclude that Russell "sucked then"?

How do you conclude that? Intuition?
    Flynn didn't?

An argument used by people that cannot refute the numbers. So what tells the rest of the story?
It went to back to back 11 win seasons.
So even though Russell was one of the best QBs in the conference and the nation, he is responsible for the overall performance of the entire team also? So it merely comes down to conference championships? Win one and you are a great leader, don't and you suck?
    No, I don't.

I don't think Russell sucked then, but looking back, i would like to have seen how Flynn would have handled the 06 team as the starter. I think we would have won a championship that year too. Did JR have more physical attributes, yes, was he a better Quarterback, leader, than Flynn, i don't think so, but that's just my opinion.

edit: And speaking of JR, i wonder how many people (non UT fans) would have predicted that to this point Vince Young would have a better career than Russell.

I agree with the statement, that right now many LSU faithful would kill to have a QB with his talent leading this team. His NFL career, thus far, has proven what some had stated back when he played here, but his performance on the field, overall, was above avg and had us playing at a level we can only hope for this upcoming season.

And I would've liked to have seen the '07 team with Russell as the starter. I wonder if we would've lost those two games. Russell had a way of pulling out improbable victories at LSU; even at AU in '06, he took us within mere yards of a miracle finish.

Did he also make bone-headed plays? Yep. But he was a good, even great, QB for us at LSU, and that's why he was the #1 overall pick.

But some around here always disliked him, and this "I told you so" sort of mentality brings that sentiment back around.

Yet you took the time to dig it up.

Yep, and you're happy with our QB situation now?

Maybe "hate" was a loosely used term. Just seems to me that you've had it in for him the whole time, and that's just from reading this one post you made on the subject. You know, comments like "Russell sucked then and he sucks now.", along with the whole "I told you so" feel of your post.

And to you, sir. Have a good weekend as well. :thumb:

That's a great point, and this along with his arm strength is why he was picked 1st round overall. The fact that he has been a bonehead in the NFL does not take away from how well he played for LSU. Was he Manning or Brees, no, but he was most definitely the best QB we have had, as far as overall talent. Was Mauck and Flynn better field generals, yep, but neither possessed the raw talent of Russell.

I was actually a huge JR supporter, and didn't want to have anything to do with Flynn. See the thing with me, was in 07 did Flynn directly contribute to the losses. And i think the answer to that is a no, Pelini's defense couldn't stop Arkansas, Flynn did everything he could, and against Kentucky, that was just bone headed coaching, getting away from what was working, which was Charles Scott ground and pound. In 06, Russell can be partially blamed for bone headed decisions in the Auburn game, and in the Florida game. In those 2 games we couldn't put points on the board. In 07, we had no problem putting points on the board, exception was Kentucky, so i guess partially Flynn can take some heat for that.

I think JR was a good quarterback while at LSU, but like i said, looking back, i would have liked to have seen Matt Flynn with the 06 team.
