Rickey stories are far and away my favorite stories, sports or non-sports. Like when he approached John Olerud about wearing a batting helmet in the field, and saying "Rickey used to play with another guy who wore a helmet in the field." And that "other guy" happened to be Olerud.

Or when he was getting on the team bus (I think this was with the Padres, but I'm not sure), and the players told him he could sit wherever he wanted because he had tenure. Rickey responded:

"Nah Rickey has sevenTEEN years!"

rickey is a good guy though. all of my cousins and i were big jose canseco fans. (his controversial off-the-field antics combined with the strike in 94 are two reasons why i don't care for MLB anymore... but i digress). our grandfather paid for us to take a trip to oakland/SF to see an A's game. we were even close enough to the dugout to get pics of the players. canseco not only struck out 4 times in the game, but refused to pose for any pictures.

    rickey posed for about 4.

I disagree. He did make bad decisions at times, but most of the time they weren't at crucial moments. JaMarcus is a clutch player that plays his best when the game is on the line.

My point is that mistakes are a lot less noticable when the team is succeeding and the offense is functioning well. So if you aren't looking for mistakes, you won't see them that much because it doesn't matter to the outcome of the game. Flynn didn't make many mistakes during the Peach Bowl - he made solid decisions the entire game, but it's a lot easier to play mistake free ball when the game isn't on your shoulders. JaMarcus often had to make plays for our offense as our Oline, RBs, and WRs weren't doing their jobs.

Well, 2 coaching staffs have agreed that he has less talent than JaMarcus.

But JaMarcus's stats support that he was a part of those wins.

    04 Spring game? SECCG?

so did Addai's stats and half a dozen other key players. Chris Jackson's stats were part of the wins, yet he doesn't even come on the field to punt unless the offense fizzles....

then some people's stat's werent so good and we won anyway.

were the bad stats a part of the win? Interceptions fumbles? I guess so.

Individual stats that are good help a team win, especially the QB. But it's a team effort. He was good ENOUGH to win. He won a few in a clutch, props for that. But he wasn't the sole reason we won. It wasn't just OBVIOUS that he was the star student so to speak. and I am not saying he has to be for us to win.

I'd like to see how much he has matured this year. Jimbo may see some emerging leadership qualities we aren't able to see. Maybe he now has that lagniappe he almost had last year. It's only his third year and his first year under the helm was 50/50. So say 2.5 years. We will see. the biggest thing that might hurt us/him is his injury. I know we are loaded with QB's but still we need them ALL healthy. It's a dog eat dog conference as we all know.

This is exactly what I keep saying. If we didn't have such a badass defense last year, there would be a lot fewer people on the JR bandwagon.
You know, the real reason that I'm concerned is that most really successful college QBs I've seen have matured/wisened up a lot faster than he has. He's been in this system for quite a while now. That's why I'm skeptical about his progress. But who knows, things could be totally different. I will say one thing...that will be one UNSTOPPABLE s.o.b. if he does fix the academic side of his game.

I agree that JR's progress has been slow, but when you look at his stats and compare them to other sophmore college QBs - he's still right up at the top. JaMarcus came from a highschool with hardly any playbook, and so he had a whole lot to learn as a college QB. This injury could be a good thing, allowing him the time to enhance his mental aspects of the game & not having his physical talents to rely on.

I agree, but he did make errors at some crucial points--see Georgia game. He has room for improvement, which is a good thing for LSU.

Check the SEC stats for 2005. LINK

Leak leads Russell in almost every passing statistic. Cox and Russell split fairly evenly.

Leak was slightly better than JR in most categories, the most imprtant one being he threw 3 less int's than JR although he had 64 more attempts. But they tied with a 136.5 pass effeciency rating.

And I have to say, that if JR was half as stupid as many people state he'd be flunking out of college or already be history. And all of those type statements go directly against what Jimbo says time and time again.
