is it just me or is Crowton's offense slowly but surely doing away with the running game? How many run plays did we call today? Not that our run game was effective when we did run, but why is this coaching staff trying to put as much pressure on Jordan Jefferson as they can? Jefferson isn't Joe Montana. He needs a running game to take pressure off of him.

It got me thinking, how many running backs in the history of LSU football have ever gone for over 1000 in a season? Have we ever had (other than Billy Cannon) a first team all american running back? Was Charles Alexander one? I don't know, but why would a running back want to come to LSU? You probably won't play much your freshman year unless everyone in front of you gets hurt, you don't really have a chance to be an awarded player. You really don't have much a chance of being an NFL player. Joe Addai made it and is an impact player, Domanick Davis was for a few seasons, Kevin Faulk is an all around player, Toefield got some carries, and Dalton Hilliard was a good pro. Other than that who else, besides Charles Alexander and Billy Cannon.

Sorry about that rant, back to the topic.

It has been said on here many times before, and i will say it again. In order for you to win the SEC you must have an effective running game. We don't, and until we do, its middle of the road SEC team playing in the who gives a damn bowl every year.

It doesn't matter if you have Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, and Walter Payton all in your backfield if your offensive line is completely incapable of opening running lanes on a consistent basis.

However, I think a very underrated source of LSU's problems running the ball is the inability of our WRs to hold blocks on the outside, which gives us a hard time using our speedy backs to stretch the field and hit the corner. The more we learn about how crappy a WR coach McCarthy was, the more I hope Billy Gonzalez can help clean this up.

Miles had 2 RBs go for over 1,000 yards, in back to back seasons for the first time since 1985 & 1986. Jacob Hester in 2007 & Charles Scott in 2008. Also, Charles Alexander was a 1st team All-American. DiNardo signed both D. Davis & Toefield. LSU has 3 RBS that had over 4,000 yards. All had good careers in the NFL.

I know Charles Scott and Hester both had 1000+. But in over 100 years of football, we can't have had too many.

Considering the mass depletion of our running back corps due to injury, this is one issue I'm willing to let go.

And CBS tells me that we had 25 rushes on 49 total plays. So the answer is "not for lack of trying".
