I totally disagree with you. Negative recruiting rarely impresses a prospect and can only serve to hurt a school's chances at recruiting him as well as its reputation. When a coach speaks with a recruit he focuses on why he should come to his school; he promotes his own school and the advantages it offers the recruit. This is what convinces a recruit to pick a particular school. Any coach that bad-mouths another school is playing a loser's game, and most coaches don't. It is often just too counterproductive. A coach may point to an opponent school's depth chart versus his own as an indication of early playing time if that is in his favor. But that is a legitimate point and is not considered negative recruiting. But most coaches will not bad-mouth another coach or any players from opposing teams. The fact that you seem to think that such practices are common and that it is okay shows how little you know about recruiting. You get real.

Scumbags, douches or whatever you want to call them... Coaches like Urban Myer and Nick Saban are able to sell their programs to these high school athletes successfully based on their charisma and success with "sales"... which is all recruiting really is. Miles obviously has it as well as the Tressels and Carrols in college football. That's why their able to keep their programs so successful, the better you sell your program and the more charismatic you come across the more top recruits you'll pull.
Obviously some coaches probably do try these bad mouth tactics, and it might work on occasion but more times then not, these kids aren't stupid, and these dark recruiting tactics don't win so they lose these kids, and a lot of times to the programs they bad mouth.
