"If I'm going to guarantee a victory, I'm going to say, 'Hey, we're going to win this ballgame,' and that's not what I said. That's not in my blood. I experimented with that my rookie year [in Detroit] and it didn't go over too well. So there's no possible way that I'm going to say I'm going to guarantee a victory. "All I said was if we pack our bags, offense, defense and special teams, we should be victorious. Now that doesn't mean we're going to win the game." Roy Williams says he didn't guarantee win for Dallas Cowboys - ESPN Dallas seems like it was a guarantee to me.
Discussed today by Rome and on Around the Horn, and all agree he wasn't cracking on the Saints, but trying to speak up for his teammates and give them a spark. "Pack our bags and show up...." in everyone's opinion, meant that the Cowboys have to bring their A-game if they are to win. If the Saints bring their A-game, they win by 21, minimum.
Man, I'd forgotten about that. On the bright side, that was probably the last time Roy Williams played to his potential.
In all fairness to LSU in '02, he didn't exactly beat a stellar defense that year. It started out great but once Damien James left/quit/got kicked off the team after the South Carolina game, the defense (secondary) basically went to crap giving up a lot of big plays. I mean we had Mike Clayton experimenting at safety in the Cotton Bowl. I don't think Williams played up to his potential as much as our defense made him and Simms look good in that game.
I was at that game, and i have never wanted to kill anyone in my life until i saw Chris Simms running up the LSU sideline taunting the fans after the long touchdown to Roy Williams.
