I'm obviously not certain, but I thought they did away with the 5yard penalty and made everything 15 whether you bumped him or nailed him.
Herstreit and Musberger seemed to think there is a difference. I think it just applies to facemask calls? They are either 15 yarders or not at all, but not in the kicking game. There's roughing and then there's running into the kicker. Fruge ran into the kicker. Really, really hard.
While I realize this is, essentially, true, I'm basing this assumption on thinking that they listened during their rules updates seminars during the summer.
when discussing any type of opinions they give, you are correct. but when discussing actual rules, they usually know what they're talking about.
lefire: Ran into is more incidental contact. Roughing was warranted in this instance since all his body weight and momentum plowed into the kicker. That's not to say that kickers won't flop as good as most NBA players to sell roughing, because they do, but that time it's an easy call. Running into is 5 yards and replay the down, roughing is 15 yards and an automatic 1st. I'll check this year's rules to see if they did away with it, but if they did it must be new this year. Did everyone forget already how 4th and 6 at Bama last year magically turned into a 1st down on running into the kicker? :hihi:
You're thinking of facemask penalties in the NFL. They did away with the 5 yard variety and made them all 15 yarders. In college there is still a 5 yard running into the kicker and a 15 yard roughing the kicker.
The dude tried to block a punt and came freaking close. Roughing the punter doesn't happen that often, especially for us. Sure, he should have been coached up afterward, but it's not like he fumbled twice, threw an INT and was flagged for intentional grounding, gave up 200 yards to one receiver, or gave up 400+ yards to a QB. We was at least trying to make a play.
