Haven't seen any mention of the bone headed penalty by the red shirt freshman Fruge. Went straight into the kicker instead of taking an angle in an effort to block the kick. Detracted from an otherwise pretty good special teams performance. My fuzzy memory tells me NC kept the drive alive and scored.
Didn't Miles pat him on the back as he came off the field? Someone told me this. Show some tough love, Les Miles. Stop the babying.
Yes, Les did pat him on the back and he did say something to him. Do you remember the scene in Major League when Willie Mays Hayes makes the basket catch in center field? When he gets to the dugout, the manager smiles and maybe even shakes his hand and then says, "Nice catch. Don't every F-ing do it again." I wonder if CLM said, "Nice Tackle. Don't ever F-ing do it again." I doubt he was congratulating him for his mistake.
Well, it did seem to kill our momentum. That's bad. On the other hand, it was a freshman mistake of commission, not omission, so I don't think Miles is too upset. He didn't have a good angle, he found a hole in the middle and just came up so fast that all of his momentum was forward and he couldn't jump. Instead of coming up and blocking the kick he ran straight into the punter. But he did get in there in a position to block it. That's good. Next time he'll be under better control and block the kick before he clobbers the punter.
Freshman? First game? Not a valid excuse. It's the coaches job to teach him that before it happens. If he learns from it, so what? It cost us a possession and that's not acceptable. Miles has to go. :yelwink2:
Any idea how many true or RS freshmen we have on special teams? And I agree that if he learns from the mistake and doesn't repeat it, all is well. If he does it next week, can you say scout team? :hihi:
No, but we are very young with only 9 seniors and 51 freshmen on the roster. Hey, he got into the game. He'll have a boner all week.
Roughing vs. Running Into My question is: what is the difference between roughing and running into and is it a 5-yard versus 15-yard penalty? I thought we more or less 'ran into' than 'roughed'. Please someone explain.
