I assume there is such an award given out. Best year ever for our defensive backfield. Best blitzing I have ever seen from the corner. We've used nickels and dimes like they were LBs. We've gotten one coverage sack after another. We've gotten one tackle for loss after another supporting the run. We've got not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, but 6 NFL caliber DBs waiting to take it to the next level on Sundays (Claiborne, Simon, Mathieu, Brooks, Taylor, Reid). Add in more valuable backups in Bryant and Loston. More exceptionally talented youth waiting their turn in Vinson, Gibson, Martin and Jenkins. This is indeed the assistant coach of the year in college football 2011. Statistically speaking: The top 3 tacklers on the team are DBs (Mathieu, Taylor, Reid). Combined 27 tackles for loss. Combined 16 interceptions. Combined 3 interceptions for touchdowns. Another returned to the 5 yard line. Combined 39 pass breakups and 57 passes defended. Combined 9 fumble recoveries. Combined 2 fumble recoveries for touchdowns. Another returned to the 1 yard line. Combined 12 forced fumbles. Combined 8 QB hurries.
I think this is the coordinator of the year award. I hope they give to him, as he definitely deserves it, based on the entire schedule we played. I jut wonder if they have an assistant coach of the year award (non coordinator).
This is one of the better staffs I've ever seen put together. Les has done very well. Can you name the two coaches on this staff, that had the Head Coaching job at the same school?
Wilson and Cooper? Or actually maybe Stud at one of the MAC schools, but I don't know who the other would be.
It's called the Broyles Award and I don't think you have to be an OC or DC. Bama's assistant HC Sunseri is up for it and he's not. The other 3 guys are.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. The clincher for Cooper to get such an award, if it exists, is that of all the names you give here, only Reid was what would be considered a big-time recruit. The others were 3-star at best. They have been coached up and transformed into NFL prospects by this staff, and through their own desire to succeed. Can't say enough about them.
