Well I will try and esplain but remember this is only my opinion. I originally started watching NASCAR about 10 years ago because my boyfriend did and it was on all the time. At the time I decided if you can't beat them join them and decided to "pick a driver". I did a little research and decided my Jeremy Mayfied. He was a young driver and I didn't want to "jump on somebodys bandwagon". Mayfield has strugled (to say the least) in the last 4-5 years. I still root for him if he is in the race, but that is not often. So through the years I have watched other drivers, some I like and some I hate. I give qball trouble about Smoke but secretly really like him. Actually went out and played pool with him in Daytona three years ago (he thinks he is good, but he needs to stick with racing. I beat him badly) I did not like Earnhart Senior. Don't get me wrong I m sorry he is dead but doesn't change the fact that I didn't like him as a driver. Gordon is really could care less about (and he gets me good points on my fantasy league). I do however like to pick on any man that decides to cheer for a rainbow colored car. So I guess what this long rambling means is that no you don't have to like just your driver, but you watch enough you will pick the ones you don't like as with any sport(merry go round...for those who get mad when I call it a sport:hihi: ) You also usually go for the other drivers in your drivers team. Hope that helps, if your a sceptic I am not sure you can be swayed unless you actually attend a rce and then I can't imagine anybody saying they didn't have fun! So come on to Daytona or Homestead we will be at both races!!!
Jeff Gordon is hated because he is the opposite of what NASCAR start off standing for. That being all those blue colar rednecks how work their butts off for a living. Here comes Jeff Gordon, rich prettyboy from Cali and starts winning right away. Most people here know my driver is Tony Stewart. I basically like him because is the closest thing NASCAR has to the late Dale Earnhardt. He can drive nasty when he wants (although he doesn't do it that much anymore) and he isn't afraid to teach a youngster a lesson or open his mouth to speak his opinion (which we all found out last week). Another note, most people who hate Jeff Gordon also hates Jimmy Johnson. Why, he basically a carbon copy of Jeff Gordon.
The problem these days is that you have to make pretty good money to GO to a race! These races are no lnger that race for the "common man." When I go to the race at Homestead (have to pay for a place sleep-which we camp out because where we go is CRAZY) it cost me almost $500 for the two days. When we go to Daytona we go for the day and it still cost at least $200. You have to have some expendable cash if you are going with one person much less if you are bring somebody! BTW qball, I picked on you and I got no comment back!! No fair!!!
That's no different than most big events though. That doesn't mean the rednecks aren't going to save up and spend their money on that one event. It's like college football. Do you think the average fan at the games in Auburn or Tuscaloosa make more than $19,000 a year?? I doubt it. Have their been scalped tickets available at the races you've gone to? I went to Pocono a few years ago, and got an incredible ticket for $20, though it's obviously easier and cheaper to get single tickets. I think I spent a total of $40 between the ticket, two fence posts, and the fence post sized koozie (genius rednecks.)
I will be honest here. I don't do scalped tickets anymore after I have heard some bad stories about people being screwed. For Homestead I bought our tickets at one of those ticket stands on the side of the road and they were GREAT tickets but I paid face value for them! In addition we like to make the race a tailgate. So money flies when you start planing that (as we all know!) Very true....:hihi:
