Eligibility of Crimson Tide safety Robby Green in doubt

TUSCALOOSA -- The eligibility of Alabama junior safety Robby Green is in doubt because of off-the-field actions that may have violated team rules and university and NCAA policy.
A potential starter in the secondary next season, Green is now likely to be suspended from spring practice and potentially as long as an entire calendar year, multiple sources told the Press-Register Thursday.
The UA football program, however, is not expected to be subjected to penalties beyond punishment for the offending player.
Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban acknowledged "a situation with Robby" in a prepared statement Thursday. Saban, who stopped short of calling it an indefinite suspension, did not delve into details of Green's transgression except to suggest the matter is being investigated and appealed by UA on behalf of the player and his family.
"We are currently in the process of determining the facts," Saban said. "To make any kind of announcement on his playing status at this time is completely premature and it is not appropriate to do so until we have a chance to go through due process for Robby and his family. If there is a change in his current status, we will make an announcement once a final determination is made."
Alabama players have been informed of Green's uncertain status.
Green, a native of New Orleans, played immediately after signing with the Crimson Tide in 2008. He was a special teams contributor in 12 games that season and played in all 14 games in 2009 as a reserve defensive back.
He was projected to compete this spring to replace departed senior Justin Woodall in the starting lineup. Former Foley standout Robert Lester and sophomore Rod Woodson are possible candidates to step into the role if Green is ineligible.
