That big hit isn't avoided by having a more mobile QB. It's avoided by the QB paying attention to what is going on right in front of his face. As for Mett, I think he's a pretty nimble guy. If you recall he had a pretty nice run last season vs Ole Miss. (03:28 mark)
if you take legs out of it and just go by arms, Bolden would be our #1 or #2 QB (most likely our #1) but, it's not just about your arm and your passing ability... what's even more important are factors such as decision-making, ability to run our offense, knowing the playbook, coachability, experience, chemistry with our receivers, ability to perform under pressure, being clutch, being able to get it done on gameday like you do in practice, being a gamer who shines on gameday even when you don't look like a baller in practice, etc, etc. Rivers, Randall, and Mett each have 1 (not 2, but 1, Red) year experience at LSU over Bolden, and 1 year is a significant head start, so I'm not surprised Mett and Rivers are our #1 and #2 right now as for Mett, he looked good last year during his first Tiger Stadium test v NSU (which satisfied the coaches enough I would think), but he looked like a shell-shocked deer in the head lights v N Texas...I'm thinking it is either because he was hurting bad from that monsterous hit he took early and all the other hits he took (welcome to college football, Mett) and/or he was extremely rattled from all the pressure of being our Savior, the whole weight of Tiger Nation on his shoulders hoping he could be our first very good QB since Flynn (who is the only LSU QB on a current NFL roster btw...and the NFL is currently hurting bad for decent QBs) we will know more about Mett next game, hopefully he shakes it off but I wish we would have put QBs #2 thru #4 in and let them throw to see how they shine under pressure, because all 4 have SEC-caliber arms and one of them might turn our to be a better gamer than Mett (whose maturity and brain are questionable at this point) as for legs, speed, I would think both Mett and Randall are faster than Bolden, who was a terrible scrambler and runner at Penn St, and was only a known as a good runner in his high school division as a power runner like Tebow was in college, just because he was so much bigger than high school kids in his high school division. its like how people think Shep should beat out OBJ as our return man just because Shep was so much better in space against his high school division (do you still think this too, Red?)
I don't think Mett has a "brain" problem. Whatever he lacks in reading abilities, he'll pick up with experience....experience I wish he already had from last year.
Does he have a SEC caliber arm or is he going to be a change-up quarterback to run the option inside the 20.
It would've been nice for Mett to have gotten some valuable experience last year, but we were on a championship run. It wasn't time to work on a QB for this year. We had two seniors at QB (who equaled one semi-acceptable QB), but they were likely the best we had, based on their experience. This is a good season to be breaking in a new QB because we get to ease into things--not starting with two major foes in the first 4 weeks of the season. Last year just wasn't practical for throwing in a completely inexperienced QB.
I think, last year, Mett was better than Lee and Jefferson put together. There were times that we could have gotten him experience and not risked losing games. (and I'm not a Miles critic )
Agree Steve. I watched all 3 in the spring game last year and Mett looked the best. I think not knowing the offense as well as JJ and JL prevented Mett from playing more. From a talent perspective Mett was better than both of them.
Think a lot of you guys are selling Rivers short. Doesn't hurt to be a little smarter sometimes...in fact, most times!
I think we see him in the second half of the Towson game if Les thinks he needs some work in LSU's system. But if he's experienced and good to go with a limited playbook, Les may hold him out to prevent opponents getting any video of him before SEC play. I suspect he will be the change-up quarterback running the option and wildcat inside the 20. I admit, there were times that Jeffersons legs made LSU hard to defend in the red zone last year. Les would love to be able to dish up a bit of that when he needs it this year.
