nola.com reports that Robert Bolden, who has 16 starts under his belt for the Nittany Lions, is on an official visit to LSU this weekend: http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2012/07/lsu_football_gets_official_vis.html#incart_river_default
LSU wants some depth for this year and I heard the coaches have already talked to the 2 QB commits already about the possibility.
If Rivers and Randall aren't adequate backups by now...something is wrong with recruiting and development. Fire Kragthorpe and Wilson immediately !!!
I'm joking, but really, we're in a $hitload of trouble if we really need Penn State's backup to be our backup.
He's started 16 games for PSU in his freshman and sophmore years. I don't think he's thinking about coming here as a backup. I smell QB controversy brewing.
Very smart move!! Need to at least look into it because neither backup QB has ever taken a game snap (spring game doesn't count His numbers are not that impressive (barely 50% completion and more INTs than TDs) but he does have a lot of experience against big time opponents. The one thing that could certainly derail this season would be if something happened to Mettenberger. He will only be a junior so as far as "don't think about coming here as a backup", my guess would be if he came to LSU, it would be for trying to start his SR season here. No one I don't think actually believes if Mettenberger has a breakout season he will come back for his SR season...I surely don't. At that time it could be Bolden, Rivers, and Randall as the only returning college players. No one is crowning either Rivers or Randall a successor to Mettenberger, certainly not Randall. And I don't think TR FR in the two QB commits are going to be much of a factor in 2013. Smart move by LSU AND Bolden!
Notice the phrase "if Mettenberger has a breakout season".... Having said that, delusions run deep for early declarations for the NFL draft. Who would have DREAMED that Russell Shepard would have said after last season that he was considering leaving LSU for the NFL draft? I couldn't believe he actually said that publicly but he did. Soooo, I guess Mettenberger could just have a mediocre at best season like Shepard's career has been and he could consider declaring for the NFL draft also. Anyway, the real point is that LSU needs to cover their bases...so far, I have yet to hear glowing reviews of either Rivers or Randall, and THIS year would be their first real backup year. I am NOT saying Bolden is a great backup either but if he transfered to LSU and learned the offense, my guess is he moves into #2 on the depth chart...by default.
