Im truly excited about being #1 in recruiting. Im a realist, so I do think Miami/Bama had the best recruiting classes last year. If the question is does rival promote Bama commits over others, Id say yes sometimes they probably do. But it has to translate on the field no matter what rivals or any other service says.
thats what ive learned too over the years. thats why im mostly disinterested in it specifically. But follow it casually simply because its a must for the team's success.
The point is it's better to be the #1 ranked class than the 17th ranked class. While the system isn't perfect, it is a barometer. Bama's number #1 class lost a lot of luster because of grades. Still the fact that they were in the national title hunt isn't a coincidence with regards to last years class.
To answer Tirk's question, yes this is nothing more than a pride thing and does not translate directly into any success on the field. And are fans hypocritical when it comes to the perceived "fairness" of the rankings? You betcha. Make it work for whatever your agenda happens to be. It's the human condition I suppose. aunt
Having a number one class helps recruiting down the line. Its a bigger deal in the internet era than it ever was.
Was reading this piece by a Florida reporter: [Bob Stoops] still gets riled when he's asked about NFL mock drafts and recruiting services. Speaking about Heisman winner Sam Bradford, Stoops talked about how former Oklahoma offensive coordinator Chuck Long liked him in camp. "He told me he wanted to go after him and I said, 'Let's go get him,' " Stoops said. "So we signed our little three-star quarterback. How about that?" http://www.gainesville.com/article/...Title=Stoops___I_still_have_some_Gator_in_me_
Since he's not likely to end up at USC, does he still suck? Not sure what lead you to this but it may have been a tad too harsh. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=3806460 http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=3805950 Sunday should be a GREAT day for cfb fans.
