True, to some extent. If they can't turn it around next year, then there's a ton of wasted talent out there. But I'd say their overall record since 2002 doesn't look hugely impressive considering their "brand". Here's the stats. Rivals / Scout 2002 #24 (LSU #15) / #13 (LSU #15) 2003 #12 (LSU #1) / #5 (LSU #2) 2004 #32 (LSU #2) / #30 (LSU #2) 2005 #40 (LSU #22) / #27 (LSU #19) 2006 #8 (LSU #7) / #5 (LSU #7) 2007 #8 (LSU #4) / #11 (LSU #5) 2008 #2 (LSU #11) / #2 (LSU #7) 2009 #12 (LSU #1) projected / #11 (LSU #4) projected
Here is Tubs talking about how important intangibles when he evaluates recruits: We do a tremendous amount of evaluating it’s a challenge to fight the media hype of a lot of guys. Again, we’re not going to sign someone just because they’re ranked real high. But again, we evaluate not just on athletic ability, and that’s what most of the star rankings are. They’re not looking at character and attitude, and we put just as much an effort to judge those players on that as we do athletic ability. And I know a lot of people look at that. you’ve got to take what you feel like is going to make you a better football team. This is a team sport. That’s how we judge it by character and attitude. Obviously, you’ve got to have speed and athletic ability, and you have to have potential, and we’re not going to sign one unless we think they have potential, but if they don’t have those other two, they’re not going to make it here. They won’t survive. You’ve got to have that attitude, and you’ve got to have good character." http://auburnbeat.blogspot.com/2008/02/tuberville-touts-excellent-class-staffs.html
thanks for that info John. interesting to see that Coaches are indeed leary of fans/media opinions of player rankings
LSU has worked it's way into the #1 spot by evaluating talent early and getting it right. We didn't just fall into it by offering prospects that were already highly rated. So essentially it's the best of both worlds of your catch-22.
Does Jacob Hester make your point? Maybe not cause it took him a bit to develope but damn the rest of the SEC once he did.
To be honest many people are happy with a class anywhere in the top 15 because they know the services will vary on opinion and some don't take into account needs of the team. I don't think anybody on here is going to be claiming LSU national recruiting champions if they finish #1. Most people can see the middle ground.
no i think most are truly excited we may be #1 overall. hence, my question(s) about its legitimacy or importance.
