http://collegebaseball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=933162 I thought it was a good article with some nice quotes that goes into the challenges presented by being both a closer and a starter. I don't read about baseball that much, so maybe I heard Hanagriff say this... Is it fair to say that Coleman feels his future in the pros is as a reliever, and that Mainieri is trying to balance what's best for the needs of the team with what one of his players wants to do? That would explain Coleman's dual role a little more clearly. Maybe that's oversimplifying it, but I really like the idea that both are looking at what's best for the team and a player's future...
i dont think it hurts coleman to do both. the scouts know what they are getting and the teams will make him whatever they want. i guess its possible that his progress is delayed a bit by not focusing, but the scouts can see his potential. his money is made on the signing bonus anyway so i dont think a little extra time in the minors will kill him.
At least we don't have Missouri's problems. Those cats have 1 starting pitcher. 1. Their coach has at least 3 or 4 times this season used a different pitcher every inning. That just can't be good.
In the SEC baseball coaches Thursday morning press conference, starts at 3:50 mark, Coach Mainieri said Coleman will not be seeing much action as a reliever this season, that it's just too much to ask a player to do, and that he wouldn't start until Sunday to give him some extra rest after this past weekend. He didn't rule out using Coleman again as a reliever, but it will be rare...
