Not exactly a rosy picture, eh?

Starting to find out why Grewe took a pitching coach job after being a head coach.

Granted, it's not all his fault, but when almost every pitcher you have on the roster gets injured in one year, you have to wonder about the way the guys are working, stretching, etc... etc...

Could they have been working too hard on the side during the season to try and get better?

Whatever it is, the garbage bin stinks.

clair, i didnt want to mention that. but it concerns me. THREE guys having tommy john surgery is either a freak coincidence, or something is going on in their training. with two, my thought was "shytty luck". with three, alarm bells started going off.

add to that, look at ranaudo. he didnt have full fledged elbow problems, but his early season injury was elbow. now throw in the factor that when he got to the cape cod league, he completely turned it around and was pitching lights out. did he finally get it back, or did he get "different" coaching?

when ar caught fire when he got to the cape cod league, i wondered about the difference. now throw in all the elbow injuries and a coupe of transfers and i have some real concerns.

I think a lot of the damage is already done by the time these guys get to college. They were all everything in high school and threw everyday, then they played legion ball and threw every day, then they played on a travel team and threw a couple extra games. Then they played in a rec league and threw everyday.

totally different topic, and i agree, but i dont think that's the issue here. a lot of it is sh1t luck, a lot of it is crappy development, but a lot of it is also mediocre (at best) coaching. i just never felt that our pitching rotations ever really developed well at LSU and that is due to coaching. college baseball is getting to the point where you need a dedicated coach who knows pitching. mainieri is a great manager, but you need specialty guys. grewe is a decent coach, but you need specialty guys. LSU has never been a program that prided itself solely on pitching, but this is getting dire. if mr. lee decides to jet to the pros, we are literally, figuratively and more than anything, definitely screwed. even if he does stay at LSU, will he develop into that next-level caliber of a pitcher that we need?

there is no way we should be in such a terrible position when it comes to pitching at LSU. i understand that it is hard to recruit at LSU because the majors tend to give extra attention to guys who receive offers from top programs like ours, but when capable guys like matulis are transferring..... maybe it will be easier for him to get a medical hardship or something, i don't know, but it's not good.

i have never heard of three guys at one time having elbow surgery. like i said, its either freaky (and crappy) coincidence, or something else. and given the surgery, it shouldnt be a problem for matulis to get a medical hardship anywhere.

just too many things going on that send up red flags, imo.

i think so too, and i have always thought that our pitching coaching has been our weakest link. along with many other fans, i felt that having a legitimate d-1 HEAD coach as a pitching coach was only a good thing. i now realize that we need someone with pitching expertise and someone who knows how to handle a bullpen.

i haven't seen injuries like this at the collegiate level, but i am sure it happens. i don't know how much it is to be attributed to coaching or how much is due to the kids' arms finally giving out like supa said. whatever it is, i think mainieri is going to do the best he can and see what happens this season. dan can wasn't the best coach, but he did OK for what we had at the time.

what about javi sanchez, did he take another position yet? wasn't ND and a school (or schools) in florida interested in him?
