http://www.nba.com/ Very sad to hear this. It makes me for one feel more vulnerable since I am starting to become middle aged.
I was sickened to hear this news. I grew up an avid Celtics fan, and loved watching DJ play. He was the glue of those great Celtics teams. A couple of weeks ago, I even remarked to my wife that I'd like to go to some Toros games and hopefully meet DJ. HatcherTiger hit the nail on the head about doing stuff before you're dead. RIP DJ.
Damn, that's sad. I grew up watching him play with Seattle (and Downtown Freddie Brown) in the late 70s. I was in high school and would stay up really late to catch those west coast playoff games on TV. I hated the Celtics until DJ started playing for them.
He was before my time so I never really got to see him play. However, averaging 2.2 blocks per game in the 1979 NBA Finals (stats from Wikipedia) from the guard position is f'ing sick. To those who actually watched him play, does he belong in the NBA HOF?
Not quite a HOF player. He was a great defender, but didn't do anything spectacular on offense. He was a solid ballhandler and assist man. He could score when needed, but he played on teams that had scorers, so that wasn't his role. He was an excellent floor general and leader.
Did Gus Johnson play on that team as well? I like you use to stay up late on Friday nights and watch these games. That was before computers, the internet, video game systems, and my kids, my how our lifestyles have changed.
Absolutely. I started to pontificate, but Bill Simmons says it better than me anyway: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/070222
