If you were the LSU AD would you go to Washington because the job opened up? Michigan is one of the top three all-time football programs in the history of the game. I wouldn't begrudge anyone who took that job. That goes double if your athletic roots sprouted from The Big House.
I'd take any predictions about the Michigan job Herbie has with a huge grain....no make that bucket of salt.
If Miles deepest wish was to be a coach at his alma mater someday, that's a good enough reason. But if his deepest wish was to be the best coach he could be . . . then LSU is who buttered his bread. The SEC is the top league in the land and he has proven that he can compete here with the best. Michigan cannot touch LSU as far as recruiting potential and recruiting is everything. There is no major competition in Louisiana and no snow in the winter time. He graduates only 9 scholarship seniors from a top-5 team, the 2011 schedule is favorable for a championship run and the BCS game is in New Orleans next year.
I heard something interesting the other day, I can't remember who said it, but they speculated that Harbaugh would be offered the Carolina job, and he would draft Andrew Luck. I would think that Cowher would be the man for that job though. Look at all these rumors, surrounding me everyday......
Maybe they'll call Les and he'll decline the job but recommend Crowton. Now that's a move by Les Miles that I would fully endorse. A win win.
Maybe it depends on how realistic Coach Miles is about the talent available to him in Michigan, and his recruiting base in the South. He'll never be able to get the players at Michigan, that he can get right where he is. (And maybe his family likes not needing snow mobiles.)
