Correct. Same middle LB who looked lost and/or timid on almost every snap he took.

Welter is gonna be one of those guys who comes up with some huge play during this season, I can feel it. It's almost written in the cards now. With all the ragging he is taking, watch him get a pick 6 against Bama that wins the game or something.

It won't matter Lasalle .... If that were to happen, there are those who will say that if he had any talent, he would have made two pick-6's against Bama.

Welter by all means is not impressive .... yet ... it's up to him if he wants to bump it up. But .. maybe he just doesn't have it in him. VHouse know him ..... maybe the kid is just at LSU on scholarship to get a degree, and really doesn't give a shit about football.

The guy hasn't been real impressive but he hadn't been nearly as bad as Izzy or others say he has. To say he shouldn't be on the team is also really taking a slap at all of the other lb's on the roster as well.

Seems like every season a number of our fans take pot shots at one or two players early in the season and then don't let up no matter what. A few years ago it was Riley and Sheppard at lb that got blasted and they might be the two best we've had at lb in quite a while.

Let their careers develope before throwing them out with the garbage!

I think he's been really bad at his job but he gets the benefit of the doubt as the first year starter. I don't know if you guys recall, but as great as the 2011 defense was, Minter was just okay. He really made the leap in 2012. He was rarely in on 3rd down in 2011. Last year, he was rarely out of the game on any defensive snap. So it does take time. The thing that worries me about Welter is he doesn't seem as physically gifted naturally as Minter was. He stepped on campus with all the physical tools needed to make an impact (much like Beckwith) but needed time to grow. Fortunately he had Kelvin Sheppard in front of him in 2010 and a ton of great D-Lineman to keep him clean and ready to make tackles for his two years as a starter.

Because of what's going on around him on the D-Line, he needs to be more than what he might be capable of. Hopefully White and Robinson continue to develop into shutdown corners. If they do, as true freshmen, look out world! Hopefully, based on the last six quarters, the D-Line will continue to improve and Welter will step up his aggressiveness. Hopefully...

Loston on the other hand, is a lost cause. These safeties worry me. I like Thompson, but Eugene is horrible unless he's blitzing. Martin is very average. It seems like he always knows what to do but tends to be a step late doing it. Depending on how this recruiting class shakes out, maybe Collins should get a look at safety...

Great take asignupe. Very true about Minter. The upgrade be made from 2011 to 2012 was incredible. All the way to a high 2nd round draft pick.

We can all hope Welter does the same thing. Although ultimately I think you're correct in the fact that what we are asking of him might be beyond his capabilities.

Loston as preseason 1st team All-American. That just seems so crazy now.

    you're being nice
but good analysis no doubt about Minter.
We have some good prospects at safety
Jefferson and Thompson comes to mind.

After watching Ole Piss tonight, I am beginning to agree with you on Welter. I noticed towards the end of the game they replaced him with Lamar Louis who looked a little bit better. Welter just flat out doesn't make enough plays for a starting MLB. Boy, I miss Kevin Minter...

Loston is kind of like the opposite of Tyrann Mathieu. Mathieu didn't have the measurables, but had incredible instincts and ball skills. Loston looks great in football uniform, but lacks instincts and ball skills. In short, Loston is a good athlete, but not a very good football player.

I haven't seen much productivity from Jordan Allen, ever since we started facing SEC caliber competion.

Anthony "Freak" Johnson is not living up to the 5 Star billing.

Frankly, I just don't see the playmakers on this defense. The front 7 gets has trouble getting off blocks and making plays. We just don't have enough players on this D that can win a 1 on 1 matchup against SEC competition. The losses to the NFL are really showing. I don't really blame Chavis. It's more about the lack of experience and playmakers on the current roster, IMHO.
