Rewatched the Florida game, LSU is essentially playing with 9 1/2 players on defense

Yep. Welter makes the calls for the linebackers and interior linemen. Chief said that the defensive backs get their calls from the sidelines and it goes to the closest cornerback who is supposed to pass it on to the other DB's. Miscommunication in the backfield was what Les and Chief said happened in the Georgia game.

Go back and look at how many tackles he whiffed on. he makes tackles but 4-5 yards downfield, he cannot plug holes or fight off blocks. Thats what a MLB does......make plays at the line of scrimmage. I was much more impressed when louis was in there, welter played the first drive, the louis played most of the rest in the first half.....go back and watch the difference in those two...where louis was making his tackles vs welters. I am not throwing him under the bus, I know him and his family, and was very surprised that he was starting this year. IMO...he is just not a very good MLB in an sec defense.

I can't tell you how profound a statement you just made there.

And do you remember how dominant they were against Florida? Same middle linebacker.

Georgia's OLine is actually the strength of that team. They have tons of experience, and have been together awhile.

I'm confused .... the above is in response to:

I was noticing Welter this past game as well, simply because issy keeps ragging on him. The biggest thing I see is he seems to be timid in stepping up into the hole and taking the hit. It seems he always lets the RB get even with him and then he would tackle from behind.

I"m not sure what you're getting at here, because you said essentially the same thing I did. ... just different words.

The thing I"ve argued is, that Welter CAN learn to plug the holes, toughen up a bit, get a little stronger, shuck the blocks, and make the plays at the line of scrimmage. That does not say that he "WILL" do that, just that he "CAN" if he puts his mind to it. It is not beyond his physical capacity.

I see both yours and issy's points. Welter is probably the "mental" part of the defense, and that is why Miles and Chavis are playing him. But as issy and now vhouse, as well as me, have noted, Welter needs a lot of "skills" development. Issy doesn't think he's capable of those skills, I think he is. Vhouse, knows the guy ... so, maybe he knows something none of us do ... like maybe he squats to pee or something ... maybe he just doesn't have the mentatlity to hit or be hit.

The proof of it all will be how he develops over the season. The FL game seems to testify that his ability to run the "Mental" aspect of the defense may be improving. But I don't see any improvement yet in a "want to crush somebody". Maybe in the next few games we'll start to see part of Welter that we haven't seen ... or maybe, he'll continue to be a pansy. It's really all up to him.
