With the score 17-7 to start the 3rd quarter, LSU went on a long time consuming drive, LSU faked a field goal and Flynn ran it successfully for a first down. LSU went on to score a TD and close the gap to 17-14.

I was watching the replay on Sun Sports here in Florida, and they had the Florida announcers version. The announcer complained that the refs missed the fact that Matt Flynn had the ball in his hands with his knee firmly planted in the ground (afterall, that's what holders must do). He then took off with the ball and made the first down.

So why does that not constitute the ball being declared "down", as it would be in every other situation in college football?

    Interesting to ponder.

Pretty sure we discussed this after the fake field goal against USC last season. Pretty sure there was an exception in the rules for holders or something along those lines.

    Edit. Info enclosed.

    Thanks for the clarification.

So in high school the SC is play is declared dead, the Florida play is declared ok.

A few friends and me discussed this years ago but there was hardly any way of finding out specifically til recently.

but there is a rule with an exception for the holder that someone dragged up from the ncaa. if not, even the extra point shouldnt count as the holder is down as he has possession of the ball.

thats the part I used to argue that the holder is down according to the rules. didnt know about this little exception.

i dont know about the high school rule. i guess hes considered down in any other situation outside of holding the kick if true or fumbling the snap.

I watched the replay on Sunshine yesterday too. The Florida announcers were making a big deal out of it, but a little later in the broadcast said they got a clarification on the rule and that there is an exception on field goals. So in the end they did get it right.

along the same lines,,,,, how about the clint stoerner "sack" against UT many years back. remember, arky was undefeated i think. he dropped back to pass and stumbled. put the ball on the ground to get his balance, got hit, fumbled. UT got the ball and scored and won the game.

shouldve been called down unless there is an exception for qbs putting the ball on the ground to regain balance.

I've heard this mentioned as a rule before, but looking at the rule book, it's not listed under ways a live ball becomes dead.

i think the same way a player is not down if he uses his hands while running, the football is likely considered an extension of his body.

Id guess its still a live play.

its really no different than picking up a ball and getting possession while its still on the ground via fumble-I suppose-just in reverse.

That makes sense. If the QB bobbles a snap and manages to pick it up he would have his hand on the ground with the ball and he can still continue play.
