I asked this question in the other section of this forum as an aside, but it may be better served to ask it here. Can you redshirt in one sport--football and play as a true freshman in another sport, for example baseball. I was commenting about Chad Jones when the question popped into my head. I believe Mitchell played both football and baseball as a true freshman so I couldn't tell from him.
Yes, he can redshirt in football and play baseball in the spring. He's on a football scholly, so the redshirt rules only pertain to a football season.
He can redshirt in football while playing in baseball. Next year, he'd have 4 years remaining of eligibility in football and 3 years of eligibility remaining in baseball. The problem with Chad Jones is that there's no reason to redshirt him. He's eligible to turn pro in baseball or football in three years. Why would you redshirt him in one just to see him leave the team after his sophomore year? Incidentally, Chris Jackson redshirted in baseball one year, so he actually has a year of eligibility remaining in baseball, should he want to use it.
I agree that Jones will not redshirt and said as much in my previous post in the other area of the forum. I thought redshirting in baseball was almost non-existent given there are not enough scholarships to go around.
