This class: Willie Ferrell. Last year: Rocky Duplessis. He's someone who should be given a preferred walk-on or something but I just don't see what the coaches see in him.
Regarding Garrett, with the recruitment of Shep I think we did about as well as could have hoped in getting a 2nd QB, especially one who is a pocket passer to complement the dual threat ability of Shepard.
From the '07 class: I was not real excited about Blackwell as a DE, but I thought he'd make a good OG. Since he has moved there, I can't list him. Stefoin Francois was a guy I wasn't really sold on until the AA game, which he did great in & changed my mind. I was excited about Ron Brooks as a kick/punt returner, but watching his film I did not see a CB. I was very, very high on Corbin & Delvin Breaux, two guys who, unfortunately, are not on the team anymore due to injuries. Aubrey was a guy a lot like Lonergan for me - I just never paid a whole lot of attention to him for some reason.
Definitely Crutchfield and Jasper, I thought one would work out but no, they suck kick 'em off the team
I would have agreed with you about Jasper a day ago but now I hear he is right there and could win the Punting job this year and he is the #1 kickoff man with Colt David out with a sprained ankle.
We should be thankful if all we've had are recruiting disappointments like Xavier Carter in recent memory. What we don't need are more recruiting busts like we've had in the past. A bust is a player that is highly touted but never performs. Like Chris Pettaway. Pettaway was an high school Parade All-American offensive lineman out of Florida who was LSU's top recruit about 20 years ago. He was a "cant miss" blue chip prospect. A man among boys. He stayed at LSU for four years and never even lettered. That was a bust!
Xavier Carter was a bust. This kid was top 10 player in the nation. A can't miss. He couldn't even effectively return kicks.
It's hard to label Xavier Carter a bust unless you're going to label Terrence Toliver a bust. The thing is that while neither player has really produced in proportion to their recruiting hype, neither have had ample opportunity. I am willing to bet that at the end of his junior year, Carter would have been a terror. He was no Bennie, not by a longshot.
